Miami enters on a two-game winning streak after taking both games in Arizona. The Marlins have been creating enough traffic without depending entirely on the long ball. A couple of timely hits can do plenty at this total.
San Diego has won two straight.
Seven and a half doesn’t demand a slugfest; one crooked inning can make this number considerably friendlier.
Pivetta has been effective since joining San Diego, but he’s still working with a relatively small sample in this rotation. Miami only needs to make him work and reach the bullpen with traffic. I trust San Diego to do the heavy lifting.
San Diego’s lineup has enough depth to punish extra baserunners. Phillips can keep Miami competitive, but traffic against the Padres can become a multi-run inning quickly. That’s where 7.5 starts feeling pretty small.
Neither starter needs to get shelled.
If both clubs contribute, eight runs is hardly asking for chaos. One early wobble could put this total in trouble.
