Walker Buehler and Logan Webb started game 1 of this series on Friday night at Oracle Park and the
The Giants jumped out to an early 2 – 0 lead from a big home run off the bat of Buster Posey in the 1st inning. Buehler gave up his first-ever HR on a 3-0 count of his career and he obviously thought a ‘get-me-over’ pitch was the way to go. Yeah, not so much as Posey destroyed the baseball as it hopped into McCovey Cove.
The game stayed at 2 – 0 until the bottom of the 7th until Kris Bryant went bye-bye off Walker Buehler to start the bottom of the inning. Webb had just gotten out a jam and the fans were in full-throat already. Bryant had only hit 1 HR in his last 30 regular-season games and he really needed that shot of confidence. The crowd could be heard from the Golden Gate Bridge, just sayin’.
Buehler only lasted one more out and Roberts ended his night with 99 pitches down 3 – 0 through 6 & 1/3.
Buehler and Webb were certainly in control of the game most of the night and you could just tell they were both going to settle in and pitch well. They did, as Webb threw 10-pitches or less in 4 of the first 5 innings in cruise-control with 8K and 8 groundballs outs through 6 innings. Bellinger recorded the only flyball out against Webb and the 53,000+ fans at the Oracle were intense all night long with a Giants lead throughout supporting the best team in baseball.
You could really feel the crowd intensity in the top of the 7th inning when Webb got in a little trouble having a man on second. However, his 10th K of the night only raised the decibel level when he got out of the jam with Giants Nation chanting ‘Beat LA, Beat LA, Beat LA!’ Keeping your emotions in check in the first post-season start of your life probably took more than we all can possibly know. Webb showed some major composure and really had all 3 of his pitches going.
Brandon Crawford let the fans celebrate one more HR when made it 4 – 0 Giants in the bottom of the 8th inning. The fat lady was tuning her throat up… She sang loud and proud as the Giants are now up 1 – 0 in the NLDS.
The Brewers took a 2 – 1 win in game 1 against Atlanta from the other NLDS series on Friday night.
Both of the National League Division Series will play on Saturday and the ALDS games will take a break until Sunday.
LA Dodgers
Jose Urias will be asked to get the Dodgers the split on the road and in a best-of-5 series as this is the importance to win this game is obvious. Going back home for two games is all well and good, but you certainly know a 1 – 1 series changes everything in the approach.
Urias had a ridiculous 20 – 3 regular season with an ERA just under 3 and 195 strikeouts. He made 5 starts vs the Giants in 2021 and threw 29 1/3 innings while only allowing 11 ER holding an impressive 33 – 3 K / BB ratio vs their division rivals.
The last time he saw this team he allowed 8 hits on September 4 but only gave up a single earned run in a game the Dodgers won, 6 – 1. The Dodgers are 2- 3 in the 5 Urias starts against the Giants. However, the 3 starts he made at Oracle Park were all fantastic as he didn’t allow more than 2 ERs in any of those starts in this park.
As was the case for game 1, plenty of numbers point to the Dodgers struggling against the Giants. You can see the trends but we all know those are just stats. The Dodgers offense will have more success in game 2 with all of those bats in that lineup that needs to burst. After being shut down in game 1 it is going to be tough to expect a complete failure in 2 of the first games in a 5-game series.
Logan Webb simply had his pitches working and the Dodgers will be happy to not have to face him again any time soon. Urias will give the lineup more confidence and the pressure is on now. This is a team that won well over 100 games and knows how to turn it on on a dime and this is that time.
SF Giants
Kevin Gausman is certainly not the ace of this staff at 14 – 6 but his 227 Ks to go with 2.81 ERA is certainly respectable as hell.
Gausman made 3 starts against the Dodgers in the regular season and he didn’t exactly do as well as Urias did against the Giants. The 30-year old right-hander hasn’t seen this lineup since July 19, however, as he didn’t make one start against them down the stretch of the regular season when it seemed these two were playing every night.
Gausman will be hoping to equal his first outing of the season against LA when he went 6 and only allowed 2 hits on a May 30th Sunday in Dodger Stadium. It was Gausman’s 6th straight win to start 2021 which he stretched to 7 before suffering his first loss of the campaign on June 12 against the Nats.
Someone you know took the Giants ML in game 1, guess who that was?! Hmm hmm, you’re welcome, but today I digress. Yes, I have the futures bet I shared with everyone, but I am a realist too. I suspect a split and the Dodgers making this a series.
Now that the Giants have a win under their belts, this game 2 will see them likely playing a little looser. This is an experienced team with veterans who know the pressure is on the Dodgers now.
Logan Webb got them off to a fantastic start and he never seems to lose at home which I stated in yesterday’s preview for game 1. He came through with a 7 & 2/3 shutout performance and the fans roared for him when Gabe Kapler came out with the call to the bullpen. After 92 pitches and a gem of an outing for Webb, his career-high 10 Ks couldn’t have come at a better time.
Rainmaker 1 – 0 with +105 Giants game 1 … It’s on to Saturday we go for Game 2…

Free Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants MLB Prediction:
I will keep the same trends from game 1 above and just update the numbers further in the Giants’ favor after their game 1 win. But this call might come as a surprise, maybe.
I could easily just hope my future’s bet on the Giants to win the NL just sees the Giants go 3 – 0 to land in the NLCS. But, we know shit is never that damn easy, so…
