Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers started their season by taking three out of four against the Rockies.
The one game they did not win in that series came when Clayton Kershaw, Tuesday’s scheduled starter, pitched.
Kershaw gave up 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Colorado scored six runs against him, though one came on an error and did not go toward Kershaw’s line.
Now 33 years old, Kershaw will take some time to ramp up. He struck out only two batters in his first start of the season but needed just 77 pitches to get 16 outs, despite all the hits. There are positives to take away from a losing effort.
The Dodgers scored five runs in the loss and 21 over the next three in the series. Kershaw knows as well as any he has a world-class team behind him. Economy will and should be his priority in the early part of the season.
Oakland Athletics
Oakland got knocked around in four home games against Houston to begin its season. The Astros outscored the A’s by 26 runs in a four-game sweep at the Coliseum.
The Athletics will have three more chances to earn their first win of the season in front of some home fans before hitting the road to play the Astros for a second series in as many regular season weekends, beginning Thursday.
Chris Bassitt didn’t pitch poorly on Opening Day against Zack Greinke but he took the loss anyway, giving up four hits and three runs in 5.1 innings to Greinke’s six scoreless.
Bassitt only threw 68 pitches, in part because, like Kershaw, he didn’t issue many walks (2), nor strike many batters out (3).
Oakland has already had to deal with injuries to three regulars. Sean Murphy, the team’s starting catcher, has missed three consecutive games headed into Monday, when he will sit for a fourth game in a row.
Ramon Laureano has missed two games but could be ready to return as soon as Monday.
Mark Canha hurt himself making a catch against the wall on Sunday and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Reports are he could wind up on the official Injured List.
