The Los Angeles Angels will look to break a lengthy losing streak when they open up a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park.
These teams haven’t met since 2017 when the Angels rolled to a three-game sweep on the road. Los Angeles has a 12-game head-to-head winning streak against Philadelphia dating all the way back to 2003.
Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper each homered twice and Philadelphia won in interim manager Rob Thomson’s debut, 10-0 over the Angels on Friday night.

Nothing is going right for the Angels at the moment, who scored a combined two runs during Thursday’s doubleheader in the Bronx as their losing streak extended to 8 games.
That wasn’t a typical performance from the Angels offense, which ranks seventh in baseball with 4.72 runs per game on a .745 OPS that ranks third in the league. Los Angeles pitching has been the main problem in the losing streak, now ranking narrowly above average with a 3.79 ERA including a mark of 4.09 from a struggling bullpen.
Taylor Ward has emerged out of nowhere to be one of baseball’s best hitters, batting .347/.459/.686 with 10 homers, 26 RBI and 29 runs scored. Mike Trout also continues to post MVP-level numbers with a .302/.402/.636 line, 13 homers, 28 RBI and 37 runs scored.
Third baseman Anthony Rendon is the big name on the Angels IL as he deals with wrist inflammation, while shortstop David Fletcher underwent adductor surgery in May.
Philadelphia Phillies
In desperate need of a win on Wednesday night with their season spiraling, the Phillies managed to erase a 5-2 deficit in the sixth inning to salvage the finale against San Francisco after losing three straight extra-innings contests.
The Phillies are just outside the top 10 in scoring at 4.51 runs per game on a .713 team OPS. Philadelphia pitching hasn’t fared as well with a 4.07 collective ERA, including a mark of 4.15 from a bullpen that has really been struggling lately.
Harper has been Philadelphia’s best hitter by a wide margin, batting .303/.359/.584 with 10 homers, six steals and 32 RBI despite dealing with a UCL injury that scratched him from Wednesday’s lineup and keeps him from playing the field. Schwarber also provides good power after signing in free agency, posting a .743 OPS with 12 homers and 25 RBI.
Philadelphia suffered a big blow earlier in the week, as second baseman Jean Segura suffered a fractured finger and will miss three months. Shortstop Didi Gregorius (sprained knee) and Rafael Marchan (strained hamstring) are also on the IL.

Phillies pitchers are always going to underperform ERA-wise due to a horrendous defense that now has to play Schwarber and Nick Castellanos every day in the outfield due to Harper’s injury, not to mention recently losing a good infielder in Segura.
