A critical 4 game set takes place starting Thursday night as the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins meet up.
With both teams currently in the AL Wild Card race, chasing the Astros, both teams have the potential to really put a damper on the other’s playoff hopes while making a push at that 2nd spot.
The Twins sit 1.5 games behind Houston for that prized 2nd Wild Card spot and the Angels sit only 3.5 back.
The crucial series gets underway at 8:10 inside Target Field.
Los Angeles
The Angels have had the door wide open with the struggles of the Astros and Twins to really make some serious ground up in the AL Wild Card race.
However, losses in 3 of their last 4 have kept them at a 3.5 game distance. The Angels fell backwards 3-1 to Seattle last night as they had their chance to gain a ground on both the Twins and Astros.
Los Angeles has scored 3 runs or less in 6 of its last 7 games and is seeing its power supply in Albert Pujols struggle as he’s in the midst of an 0 for 15 slump.
The Angels will send LH Hector Santiago to the mound who has come up with 2 clutch starts in the month of September. He first knocked off Texas by throwing 6 scoreless innings on just 1 hit.
He followed that up with by giving up 2 runs in 7 innings against the Houston Astros.
Santiago will look for his 3rd straight solid start as he’s came up huge for the Angels during this playoff push.
Minnesota Twins
The Twins had their chances on Wednesday to get within just a .5 game of the Houston Astros, but failed to do so against the Detroit Tigers.
Minnesota led 3-2 going into the 9th only to blow the lead and trail 4-3 heading into the bottom half of the inning. Minnesota started the inning off with back-to-back doubles, but later had a guy thrown out at home to send the game into extra innings.
Minnesota eventually fell in 13 innings.
Things won’t be easy for Minnesota here as they’ve dropped 8 of 9 to the Angels.
They’ll send LH Tommy Milone to the hill in hopes of starting the series off the right foot. Milone brings in an 8-5 record with an ERA of 3.73.
Milone got knocked around in his last start going only 3.2 innings allowing 7 runs on 8 hits.
