Royals vs. Astros Gameday
Kansas City and Houston finish their three-game series Thursday night at Daikin Park. The Royals enter at 67-85, while the Astros are 76-76 with only 10 games remaining in their regular season. Houston’s situation has suddenly become uncomfortable. Wednesday’s 5-2 loss dropped the Astros into a tie with Texas atop the AL West, although Houston owns the tiebreaker.
Houston spent weeks alone in first place; September has apparently decided that was getting boring.
Kansas City has won two of three and bounced back from Tuesday’s 4-2 loss by taking Wednesday’s game 5-2. John Rave hit a two-run homer, Michael Massey went deep and Daniel Lynch IV worked five scoreless innings.
The Royals are out of the playoff race.
Houston very much isn’t, which gives Thursday’s series finale a little more juice than the records alone suggest.

Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros Odds & Last 5
Houston opened as the favorite, with the Astros around -149 and Kansas City +125. The Royals are +1.5 on the runline, while the total sits at 9.0.
Kansas City has won two of its last three and enters the finale after Wednesday’s 5-2 victory. The Royals have scored seven runs in the first two games of this series while allowing six.
Houston has lost four of five.
The Astros won Tuesday behind two Jeremy Peña home runs and a Yordan Alvarez blast, but the rest of the lineup has offered very little. Houston’s hitters outside Peña and Alvarez went a combined 4-for-47 through the first two games of the series.
Astros Stats
Houston has hit 201 home runs this season, putting plenty of power in the lineup despite a .239 team batting average. The Astros also carry a .409 slugging percentage, so this offense can still do damage quickly when somebody besides the usual suspects joins in.
Yordan Alvarez remains the centerpiece. He’s batting .310 with 39 home runs and 98 RBIs, along with a .428 on-base percentage and .594 slugging percentage.
Alvarez and Peña are doing their part; Houston could use a few volunteers from the rest of the lineup.
The pitching staff has been less reliable, carrying a 4.54 ERA. Houston has still held opponents to a .237 batting average and generated 1,325 strikeouts.
That’s been enough to keep the Astros in the race.
The immediate problem is an offense that managed only two runs Wednesday and has now lost four of five. With Texas pulling even in the division, there isn’t much runway left for another quiet week.
Royals Stats
Kansas City enters Thursday batting .245 and leads MLB with 272 doubles.
The Royals have hit 158 home runs, so much of their damage has come from keeping innings moving rather than waiting around for three-run bombs.
Bobby Witt Jr. is batting .278 with 18 home runs, while Carter Jensen leads Kansas City with 24 homers. Michael Massey owns a .282 average and homered Wednesday as part of a three-hit night.
The pitching hasn’t been nearly as tidy.
Kansas City owns a 4.62 ERA and ranks near the bottom of MLB in strikeouts. The Royals do have 61 quality starts, giving them considerably more stability from the rotation than that overall ERA might suggest.
They got another strong start Wednesday. Lynch gave Kansas City five scoreless innings before the bullpen finished off Houston, and now the Royals have a chance to take the series before heading to Pittsburgh.

Royals vs. Astros Pitching Matchup
Seth Lugo starts for Kansas City with a 7-8 record, 4.99 ERA and 126 strikeouts. His 1.45 WHIP has been the larger concern, with too many innings requiring him to work around traffic.
Lugo has been inconsistent enough that Houston should have opportunities.
Lugo can navigate traffic, but Houston would prefer to finally make somebody pay the toll.
The Astros have not officially announced their starter for Thursday’s finale. Miguel Ullola has been mentioned as a possibility, but MLB still lists Houston’s starter as TBD, so treating him as confirmed would be getting ahead of the Astros themselves.
That uncertainty puts more pressure on Houston’s bullpen and offense. The Astros have a rested relief group after Cristian Javier worked into the sixth Wednesday, but somebody still has to cover the early innings.
For Kansas City, the assignment is much clearer.
Royals vs. Astros bottom line: Houston has picked a lousy time to forget how to hit, but Lugo has been generous enough with baserunners to offer a pretty good memory jog.

Kansas City has taken two of three in this series, including Wednesday’s 5-2 win. Houston’s offense has been quiet outside Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez, so laying this price requires faith that somebody else remembers where the RBI button is.
Houston picked a lousy week for its offense to become a two-man operation.
The Stros still owns the better overall lineup and gets the finale at Daikin Park.
Seth Lugo is the concern for KC. His 4.99 ERA and 1.45 WHIP leave traffic on the bases, and Houston has enough power to make those baserunners expensive.
The Royals are 28-49 away from home, while Houston is hovering around .500 at Daikin Park. Neither number is beautiful. Only one club, though, is playing with its postseason life sitting on the table.
The Astros haven’t named their starter yet, so I’m not inventing one to make the pitching matchup prettier. This bet is about Houston’s lineup responding at home against Lugo.
It may not be comfortable, but September rarely sends a thank-you card.
