The Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros continue their series Wednesday night at Daikin Park with the two clubs headed in very different directions. Kansas City enters at 66-85 after losing three straight, while Houston improved to 76-75 with Tuesday’s 4-2 victory.
The Astros remain on top of the AL West and are trying to protect a narrow division lead over Texas.
Houston opened its final homestand by getting three home runs from Peña and Alvarez.
Jeremy Peña homered twice in Tuesday’s opener, and Yordan Alvarez added a two-run shot as Houston generated all four of its runs with the long ball. Hunter Brown and the Astros bullpen made the lead stand up.
Kansas City has now dropped 10 of its last 14 games. Vinnie Pasquantino homered Tuesday, while rookie Carter Jensen added an RBI double, but the Royals finished with only four hits and struck out 14 times.

Houston’s lineup still has serious home-run potential, and Yordan Alvarez remains the biggest threat. Alvarez is batting .310 with 39 home runs after going deep Tuesday, while his ability to reach base consistently gives the Astros a dangerous centerpiece in the middle of the order.

Alvarez and Peña accounted for all four Houston runs in Tuesday’s series-opening victory.
Peña finished 3-for-4 and scored three times, giving Houston an immediate lift after entering the series in an extended slump. Christian Walker and Cam Smith provide additional power around Alvarez, with Walker at 25 homers and Smith at 20.
The bullpen remains an important strength late in games. Josh Hader recorded his 26th save Tuesday and lowered his ERA to 0.85, giving Houston a dominant option when it can carry a lead into the ninth inning.

Kansas City’s offense has several productive pieces despite the club’s poor overall record. Bobby Witt Jr. is batting .280 with 18 home runs and 41 stolen bases, while Jac Caglianone has supplied a .279 average with 23 homers.
Carter Jensen has emerged as another significant part of the lineup. The rookie catcher leads Kansas City with 24 home runs and owns a .452 slugging percentage, while his RBI double Tuesday gave him a Royals rookie-record 58 extra-base hits.

Daniel Lynch IV gets the start for Kansas City with a 5-5 record and 3.52 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 49 batters and enters with the better run-prevention numbers of Wednesday’s two starters.

Houston does not need a blowout here; it needs one more run than a fading Kansas City club.
Cristian Javier is the concern. His 5.50 ERA and 1.46 WHIP make laying a bigger price uncomfortable, but the moneyline keeps us away from asking him to dominate or cover a run line.
That matters because Houston still has late-game leverage.
