Kansas City Royals
It is early but when a team is a surprise division leader the question is whether they can keep it up. In the case of Kansas City this is a solid maybe. This lineup can be one of the better ones in the Majors even if they do not hit a lot of home runs. It would be good is Jorge Soler was a regular power threat though.
They are going to have to pitch better though. Mike Minor was supposed to be a veteran presence in the top three of the rotation but he has struggled in his return to Kansas City. This is a favourable matchup though.
Also, even though they have brought back familiar names in Greg Holland and Wade Davis, this is not the calibre of bullpen they had in the years when they went to back to back World Series.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers are bad, just not terrible, so I guess that is a positive. Detroit is second to last in scoring and last ERA in the Majors. Miguel Cabrera is on the shelf but he has not been producing for the Tigers this season anyway. The cast of bats they are relying on is very unproven right now.
Casey Mize has made three starts and definitely looks better than he did a year ago. When you watch him pitch you see what could be a very good pitcher but I am not sure he has the stuff to really dominate. He is not the next Justin Verlander.
Detroit is searching for arms in the bullpen. Whenever they have had one of late they have dealt it away and have not been able to find lottery tickets the way that some other franchises have.
