Houston Astros
Houston made easy 3-1 work of Texas Sunday while sending the Rangers a 12th straight loss. The Astros have found their post All Star break groove at 5-1 since July 19.
Always posing a 2-9 lineup threat, and excellent pitching, the Astros can catch fire any time. Although, Seattle has played the Astros well this year, and has the arms to give Houston another test
Houston starts rhp Lance McCullers Jr. tonight for his first 2021 look at Seattle. McCullers has regained all star form this year while posting a 7-2 record and 3.04 era through 91 innings. The Astros stand 10-6 on the season when Mccullers opens or appears. Following a dominant May & June, however, McCullers has cooled this month posting a 1-2 record and giving up four runs in four innings during Houston’s 5-4 July 21 loss vs. Cleveland.
When considering McCullers hasn’t suffered consecutive subpar 2021 outings, expect a rebound performance today opposite light-hitting Seattle. Throwing behind the league’s top offense at 5.37 runs per game should only boost McCuller’s mound presence.
Seattle Mariners
After taking 3 of 4 from Oakland, the Mariners ride a confidence swell ahead of their Houston series. Those three wins each came by one run as the Mariners inch toward wild card status, and stand 23-8 this year in games decided by a single tally.
Entering a trade deadline buyer’s market for the first time since rebuilding, Seattle’s betting value is at its 2021 peak.
The Mariners, however, will need every inning from their starting rotation to maintain form vs. Houston.
Upstart rhp Chris Flexen earns the starting nod today for Seattle. Taken as a flier by the Mariners from NYM’s prospect heap, Flexen stands 9-4 with a 3.35 era to bolster one of the league’s top pitching staffs. Flexen is a major cog in Seattle’s rise as the Mariners are 13-5 when he tosses.
