Both of these teams are in similar positions having treaded water for the first 60 games of the season. The question is whether either of them can go on a run to get into contention.
I think the better bet is Detroit who has the better offense and pitching. The only advantage I see for New York is that killer back end of the bullpen.
Detroit
The Tigers should be feeling pretty good having cooled off the Jays to start the week. This team is still not clicking on all cylinders on offense but once they do they should be among the best in the league.
Justin Upton has been a big bust so far but also lost has bee the fact that SS Jose Iglesias has dropped from being a .300 hitter a year ago to just .236.
For a little while the Tigers had one of the best rotations in the game. Now they have Mike Pelfrey at the back end. Pelfrey gives up way too many hits, homers and walks but other than that he is awesome.
I have never been a fan and he is one of my favourite fade targets – he is 1-5 this season. Thrown in that the bullpen still has a lot of question marks and it is hard to get behind Detroit when he pitches.
New York Yankees
Alex Rodriguez is back in the lineup and sadly they missed him while he was on the shelf. Since coming back the Yankees have gotten a boost as it appears their lineup is going to have to be the key to any kind of surge they might experience.
It is funny because his presence has an impact of their top hitter Carlos Beltran who has been hot.
He says he likes playing the field and it has been showing to date. He went yard in three straight games earlier in the week.
CC Sabathia has turned back the clock a bit with a 2.58 ERA thus far. He is not the horse who could start what he finished earlier in his career but on this club a solid 6 innings is super valuable and most of the time he is giving them that.
The back of the pen is putting up gaudy strikeout numbers as well as tons of pressure on opponents to get to the Yankees, early on.

Normally I use this section to make a case for both teams but with Peflrey going for Detroit it is tough. However, in games in which he has not gotten a decision the Tigers are 3-2 making their overall record a tad better (4-7) when he starts.
The Yankees are 4-5 when Sabathia starts. He might be getting with the program in terms of cranking out solid 6IP starts but the support hasn’t been there consistently.
This could be a good as long as there is not too much of a premium.

I imagine the total will be in the 9 range and both of these offense could cover that on their own. Sabathia is likely due for some regression on run prevention and Pelfrey is always good for getting lit up. Expect a lot of runners on and coming home.
