AL Central foes will begin a three-game series on Monday night when the Detroit Tigers visit the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
These teams met for a three-game set back in late April with the Twins rolling to a home sweep, outscoring the Tigers 17-5. Detroit hasn’t beaten Minnesota in any season series dating back to 2016.
Max Kepler hit an early grand slam, and Gio Urshela’s infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Twins a 5-4 walk off victory over the Tigers on Monday night.
Sonny Gray struck out a season-high 10 over 7 sharp innings, carrying the Twins past the Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.
Detroit Tigers
It’s been a huge struggle for a Tigers offense that averages an MLB-worst 2.72 runs per game on a .596 OPS. Detroit has at least been good on the pitching side, posting a 3.67 collective ERA including a mark of 3.13 from a strong bullpen.
Willi Castro has been Detroit’s top currently hitter, batting .302/.358/.397 with 4 RBI’s and 6 runs scored across 23 games. Cabrera is putting together a solid season at age 39 as he continues to pass career milestones, batting .276/.319/.394 with 3 homers, 15 RBI’s and 12 runs scored overall.
Rookie Beau Brieske will make his sixth career start, hoping for a quick turnaround as he’s gone 0-3 with a 5.13 ERA across 26.1 innings since being called up.
Outfielder Austin Meadows, a key offseason acquisition who has been one of Detroit’s best hitters, is on the IL with vertigo symptoms, with backup catcher Jake Rogers (Tommy John surgery) and outfielder Victor Reyes (strained quad) also out.
Minnesota Twins
Overcoming injuries all over the roster, the Twins have managed an above average offense at 4.28 runs per game on a .713 OPS. The Twins have been terrific on the pitching side, posting a 3.33 collective ERA that ranks 4th in baseball with the bullpen posting a strong mark of 3.38.
Byron Buxton is one of the best players in baseball when healthy, putting up a .917 OPS with 11 homers, 21 RBI and 24 runs scored in only 27 games played. Arraez, recently returned off the IL, is batting .336/.437/.411 with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored across 26 games played.
Chris Archer will make his eighth start in a Twins uniform after going four innings against the Oakland Athletics last Monday. The 33-year-old is hoping to get his career back on track after a couple of down years, going 0-1 with a 4.10 ERA over 26.1 innings overall.
Minnesota has gotten much healthier of late, and first baseman Miguel Sano (knee surgery) is currently the only position player on the IL.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Detroit is 11-10 ATS on the road
- Detroit O/U are 6-15 on the road
- Minnesota is 11-12 ATS at home
- Minnesota O/U are 8-13-2 at home
Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
The Twins certainly appear to be a contender at this point of the season, and should have more than enough firepower to handle a Detroit team that hoped to take a step forward but just hasn’t been able to get going.
With neither team sending a particularly trustworthy starting pitcher, backing the far superior Twins offense at these plus odds on the run line is the right move.
Detroit is the lowest scoring team in baseball and its underlying metrics aren’t any kinder with the Tigers ranking dead last at a 77 wRC+ with only 20 home runs on the year, 5 fewer than any other team.
Give me the Twins to cover the run-line at home.
