The Tigers are hanging in early in the AL Central while the Twins are definitely not taking the leap forward some had predicted.
If Detroit is going to stay in the race with Kansas City and Chicago then they have to win a high percentage of games against teams like Minnesota. This series looks like a big mismatch.
Detroit Tigers
Detroit has a top ten offense surprisingly led by the power bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia – he leads the team with six homers in part time action. Things will really start looking good for the Tigers when Miggy starts hitting.
He has not been terrible but he and Victor Martinez are capable of so much more. Nick Castellanos has failed to live up to his hype as a prospect but is off to a very hot start while Justin Upton has been a disaster, maybe the biggest disappointment in the Majors.
Jordan Zimmerman has been near perfect through four starts in the American League. He has a 4-0 record and has only given up 1ER in 26 innings. At some point he is going to get touched up but it does not look like Minnesota is the group to do it.
The Tigers have been burned by a shake bullpen the last few seasons. I am not saying they have solved it but the move towards the middle of pack is a positive sign. K-Rod has not been untouchable as the close but overall the collection has performed.
Minnesota Twins
The Twins best prospects are position players but they have been really struggling to get any sort of consistent offense going this season.
Miguel Sano has been better lately but fellow prospect Byron Buxton is still offering not much more than a toolsy profile. He strikes out way too much and you have to wonder about him long term.
The only real positive they have in their lineup right now is the fact that Joe Mauer does not look totally washed up.
Pitching has been better than expected for the Twins this season – middle of the pack. Tyler Duffey is a guy they are high on but he has made just one start this season and is questionable for this one.
He absolutely has to get more economical with his approach. He only got in four innings in his first outing.
The Twins bullpen has been good, propping up a rotation that does not work deep into the game that often. It really hurt this group to lose Glen Perkins. Kevin Jepsen has not been super reliable which has opened the door for others to close games as part of a committee.

Zimmerman has been great so that will clip some value but something like -140 is not so bad for this kind of matchup. Look hard at the over too and maybe parlay them together.
