There’s a common sentiment that when a great team gets embarrassed they bounce back with a vengeance. We’ve seen that in the NHL after teams like Vegas and Tampa Bay lose a game, it’s time for Houston to test that theory.
The Astros were -251 favorites vs. Detroit in their series opener on Monday night but got plunked 6-2. It was a dominant with a 6-0 lead before a couple tack-ons in the 8th and 9th from Houston. Detroit cashed at +225 in game one.
Very few people are giving the Tigers a shot at making it two in a row – but hey, that’s why there’s value in Detroit as the +155 underdog in this spot. Houston starts a very rusty Jake Odorizzi in this one, so maybe the Tigers are the play.
A.J. Hinch would definitely take a repeat of Monday’s offensive performance as Renato Nunez, Akil Baddoo, and Grayson Greiner all went deep for a Tigers team that is 25th in runs/game and 28th in batting average.
The big worry coming into Tuesday’s game two is if the Tigers’ performance on Monday was a random once-off. Detroit had lost five straight prior, barely beating Monday’s total with 9 runs over that span.
Matthew Boyd on the mound vs. the Astros doesn’t exactly exude confidence either. The lefty is 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA through two starts, but has allowed 7HR in four career starts vs. the ‘Stros. The good news is that only 2 of those came against the active/current roster.
The Astros seem to be in a great spot for a rebound beating, but they haven’t played their best baseball either lately riding a current 3-game losing streak. That has followed a 6-1 start to the season.
The Houston offense seems to be in neutral during their current stretch, scoring just 7 runs in the last three games. They put up 42 total in the first five games of the season, so this is a 180.
Houston’s Kyle Tucker has been impressive to start the season, banging out hits in 8 of the last 9 games. Jose Altuve is just 2-8 in his career vs. Boyd, but one of those hits was a HR.
The major reason why the Astros can’t be trusted even in the bounce back / angry game is because starter Jake Odorizzi is an unknown. He was great in 2019 with Minnesota (15-7, 3.51), but hasn’t started a regular season game since September 16th of last year.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:

- Tigers are 1-9 last 10 meetings
Free Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
Houston could very well come out with a vengeance in this one, but it’s not their bats that bettors should be worried about. Odorizzi is just too much of an x-factor, especially after posting a 15.75 ERA in two spring training starts.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Tigers +1.5 (-120)
Boyd’s struggles came against a lot of the Astros batters that are no longer with the team. That should help him minimize the damage on Tuesday and lead to the Tigers at least keeping things close.
