A pair of familiar foes will square off in the Bay Area for an NL West showdown between the Colorado Rockies and the hosting San Francisco Giants.
These National League West rivals have met six times this year, and the Giants won five of those games, winning both series in the process.
Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies were swept at home by the Atlanta Braves in a four-game series. It was the third time this season they were swept, but the first time they failed to win a single game in a home series.
Atlanta opened the series with a comfortable 13-6 victory, after which the Rockies played better but lost the following two games in extra innings and the final game of the series 8-7.
Heading into the series with the Giants, Colorado holds a record of 23-31 and sits in last in the NL West. They trail the division leading Dodgers by 12 games and the Diamondbacks by 2 games for the fourth spot.
San Francisco Giants
I would say the Giants have played well this season. It has not been anything over-the-top but they have been a steady ball club.
The San Francisco Giants spent the previous three series on the road where they faced the Reds, Phillies, and Marlins, and managed to win only one of them. After losing two of the opening three games of the series against the Miami Marlins, the Giants did secure a 5-1 victory, finishing a ten-game road trip with a 5-5 record.
Heading into the series with the Rockies, San Francisco holds a record of 29-24 and sits 3rd in the NL West. They trail the division leading Dodgers by 5.5 games and the Padres by 2.5 games
There is no question that the Giants could get back into the mix of things in that division but they do have to start playing more consistently. Unless things change a lot, neither Los Angeles nor San Diego is going anywhere which is why it is important for this team to not slide too far down.
As I look at this team, I do feel they can be a threat in the NL but I do not feel they are the most talented. There are certainly teams that have more firepower than they do which could get catch up to them in the playoffs.
I am not saying the Giants are devoid of talent but if they beefed up their roster on both sides of the field, it might put them more in the contender category. I feel what they have now will get them to a certain point but not to the promised land.
The pitching certainly has not been very good for this team at all in the series with the Rockies. After Logan Webb delivered a strong outing on Tuesday, the bullpen did not look good at all and nearly blew the game. Thankfully the offense for San Francisco came to play as well.

Colorado isn’t great away from the high altitude and it doesn’t get much lower than playing in the Bay Area.
