In terms of wins and losses these teams are not that far apart. That is because the Rox have slugged their way to decent start while the Dodgers have been willing to meet them in the middle.
There is no doubt what the respective strengths of these teams are. Colorado took the opener on Monday and will look to gain even more ground before they leave town.
Colorado Rockies
The Rox are one of handful of teams that are scoring more than 5 runs per game. Nolan Arenado is one of the best hitters in the game and he and Carlos Gonzalez give them a great righty/lefty middle of the order.
The Trevor Story story has cooled but he is a threat even if he strikes out a third of the time. Whether at home or on the road this lineup is capable of putting a hurt on opponents.
Chris Rusin has been in and out of the rotation this season. It seems like the Rockies are always looking for answers there so every time he has a couple of good relief appearances in a row they throw him back out there with middling results.
He has faced the Dodgers once this season – three shutout innings in relief back in April.
L.A. Dodgers
L.A. continues to spin its wheels. There is no doubting the talent on the team but they have yet to have a great stretch. They have yet to have a terrible one either which is why they are where they are.
Primarily it is on offense where they are looking for answers.
It has been great to see rookie Corey Seager be a star but now they need their veterans to pull their own weight. Getting healthy is only part of the challenge.
Kenta Maeda is not taking the Majors by storm but he has been effective since he got to L.A.
He has been sharper in his last couple of outings and his best of the season might have been against the Rockies, at Coors Field – 6.7 IP/ 0ER with 8 Ks.
The Dodgers bullpen has been really good but it will be up to Maeda to tame the beast.
