The MLB postseason is finally here. We have come a long way from the “Tell us when and where” tweets but we have officially made it to October baseball.
With the playoffs kicking off yesterday it might not have felt like postseason baseball we remember, but it is indeed time to chase a world series ring and the New York Yankees showed that they aren’t going to messing around this year.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees faced off against the Cleveland Indians last night in game 1 of the American League Wildcard Series (COVID format), and while the game was suppose to be a pitching duel, the Bronx Bombers did what they do best.
The Yankees scored 12 runs on nine hits in a all around dominate effort, beating the Indians 12-3. Not only was the hitting impressive, they did it against the current Cy Young front runner Shane Bieber!
Bieber was a NIGHTMARE for hitters this season but for the first time all year he didn’t even make it out of fifth.
Allowing seven earned in four and 2/3 innings of work the Indians ace showed that what might work in the regular season, just isn’t gonna cut it in October (Yes I know its September still but you get the point).
The Yankees started early with Judge hitting a 400 foot, 2-run shot on the first pitch he saw in the first inning. Bieber let up a hit in each of his five innings including RBI doubles to Luke Voit, Brett Gardner, and a pitching change causing, 2 run homer to Gleyber Torres.
New York went on to put up 4 more runs in the 7th off a Gio Urshela sac fly, Torres single and another 2-run shot, this time by Gardner, that set this one in stone. Those two saw the ball really well last night as Brett went 3-5 and Gleyber went 4-4 with one walk.
The Indians couldn’t do much against a Gerrit Cole that very much looked like the Cole from Houston. He had 13 K’s on just 6 hits as he had a dominant 7 innings pitched, becoming the first AL pitcher in history to record 13+ K’s & 0 BB in a postseason start. This allowed the Yankees to keep their bullpen rested as they only needed Louis Cessa to record the last 6 outs.
This was a best case scenario start for the Yankees who will look to continue off this performance as they send Masahiro Tanaka to try and send the Tribe home in two games.
Tanaka has had a decent year with the Yankees posting a 3-3 record and a 3.56 ERA. His However his last start was his worst on the year. Against the Blue Jays he allowed five runs on eight hits in just four innings, showing command issues as well with walking three.
Tanaka will look to start the playoffs off on a better note and the Yankees hitters will try to provide the same amount of support they gave to their former Cy Young winner in Cole.
Cleveland Indians
The Indians had entered the postseason with high hopes as they had won 9 of their last 11 heading into Tuesday night. They met a truly ready Gerrit Cole who proved that the slate is clean and the stakes are much higher.
The Indians 1-4 hitters combined for an abysmal 2-15 as Lindor was 0-4 at leadoff and Carlos Santana was also held hitless in the cleanup spot.
The Indians will be facing a much more hit-able opponent in Tanaka who did not face Cleveland during the regular season. Tanaka did hold the Indians to a two-run game last year through six and a third.
Its not all doom and gloom for the Indians who despite last nights efforts have a very talented pitching staff and are following Shane Bieber with the always competent Carlos Carrasco.
Carrasco has a 3-4 record but allowing only 2.91 ERA and has a WHIP of 1.21. The Indians will need Carlos to have a good night on the mound but perhaps more importantly they will need their lineup to provide some support as this Yankees club is hard to keep quiet.
Free NY Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians MLB Prediction: Over 8
At even odds I really like this bet tonight as the pressure is on for the Indians to take the first game to the chin and perform in a must-win game two. They certainly didn’t expect to find themselves in this situation as their pitching triple crown winner (posting the lowest ERA (1.63), most strikeouts (122), and leading the league in wins (8) was sent to the dugout before the end of the fifth.
The Yankees on the other hand will look to continue their excellent hitting and will find that even though they aren’t going against Bieber, Carasco is no one to take lightly.
With Tanaka being not as dominant as Cole I think the Indians will be able to rally and put up some runs in a huge game for them on Wednesday night. However I don’t think it will be enough and ultimately the Yankees will overwhelm them and send the Indians home before October even begins.
