The Indians had Thursday off to travel and they made their way to Yankee Stadium to face the Yanks for a 3-game set this weekend in the Bronx. Cleveland is not playing for a damn thing at 71 – 73 but simply finishes out the schedule while looking towards 2022.
The Tribe just took 2 of 3 games from the Twins after being swept by Milwaukee the series before.
The Yankees finished their series with the Orioles on Thursday as the game was moved to 5 p.m to avoid the expected rain in the forecast. Wednesday night’s game was finished in a nice downpour as the Yankees took a 4 – 3 win over the Orioles and had the broom out looking for the sweep. There was no sweep as the Yanks lost in 10 innings because Gary Sanchez has no idea what it means to actually be a catcher in the bigs.
Cleveland Indians
There is not much to say about the Tribe other than they barely have hung on to a .500 record and the post-season was never really in the conversation. The White Sox have had control of the AL Central lead for quite some time and that won’t change.
Zach Plesac gets the start today for the Tribe and he has been a shining light at 10 – 5 with a semi-reasonable 4.51 ERA this season. Plesac has that strange record for pitchers who have gone up against someone who threw a no-hitter. Plesac has been on the mound for 3 no-hitters that came against the Tribe this season alone. Let’s call that lack of run support if there ever was one because it is tough to win baseball games when your own team can’t hit.
At the same token, the Tribe has some mashers in this lineup, and on any given day they can break out for some big numbers.
Cleveland has bashed out 183 dingers this season and that is good for 12th in MLB. In addition, the Tribe sits 4th in baseball stealing bases but they simply haven’t been able to catch the Chi-Sox.
NY Yankees
Well, Jordan Montgomery continues to get little to no run-support but he pitched with a lead most of the night against the Orioles on Thursday. The Yanks took a 2 – 0 lead in the 2nd inning and Montgomery used his change-up effectively to keep the Orioles off the board until he gave up a bomb to Ryan Mountcastle in the bottom of the 6th. Monty ended up striking out a career-high 12 Orioles in a game that had a constant mist in the air from the 3rd inning on. After 99 pitches Boone saw enough and Monty ended the game going 5 2/3 leaving with a 2 – 1 lead.
Corey Kluber gets the nod for Aaron Boone tonight and he is making his 4th start since coming off the IL. Kluber hasn’t gotten a decision in any of his three outings since August 30th and he has not lasted more than 4 innings from those showings either. When Kluber hits 80 pitches or so, he will be looking towards the dugout waiting to be removed from the game.
That could make any start he makes a tough one to navigate because a good hitting team will make him throw pitches and knock him out early. Kluber obviously has his history with the Tribe being there from 2011 – 2019. I don’t think anyone even recognized that he played for Texas in 2020 because I do recall he threw about an inning and that was it.
The Yankees wild pitch count was high on Thursday night, but Gary Sanchez simply could not get in front of anything and HE is why the last run to tie the game at 2 happened in the bottom of the ninth. Sure, Clay Holmes was all over the place in the rain, but Sanchez needs to learn how to keep baseballs in front of him, end of the story. If you don’t get why Gerritt Cole won’t pitch to Sanchez and has someone else behind the plate even if Higashioka can’t hit? Sanchez needs a whole tutorial about what it means to defend and actually be a respected catcher for his glove. His bat is not enough to keep him around IMO!

Free Cleveland Indians vs. New York Yankees MLB Prediction:
I like this total to go over the number and it might not just stay still at 9.5 either. FOr now, it is that but I expect to see 10 as the game time arrives.
