The St. Louis Cardinals are still right in the thick of the National League Wild Card race and their 4 game series against the Reds could be the perfect opportunity for them to make a move.
After losing to Cincinnati 15-2 on Monday night, the Cardinals will need to win the next three games if they realistically want to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Cardinals will send Adam Wainwright out to the mound Tuesday night for game two while the Cincinnati Reds will put Robert Stephenson on the hill.
St. Louis Cardinals
Adam Wainwright was originally supposed to start in the opener Monday night against the Reds, but his start was pushed back to Tuesdays game.
I am guessing this is so the Cardinal’s right hander would be coming off of extra rest if the Cards are put in a must win situation in his next start on Sunday.
Wainwright struggled in his last outing against the Rockies, giving up four runs off of seven hits in 5.1 innings.
While he had a hard time on the mound, he was able to contribute with the wood .
Wainwright has a record of 12-9 with an ERA of 4.57 and a 1.38 WHIP throughout 187 innings of work this season. He is 3-2 through his last 7 innings with a 4.07 ERA
At this point, the Cincinnati Reds are simply playing for the highest draft pick that they can get. However, they would love an opportunity to play spoiler against a division rival if the opportunity presents itself.
They will send rookie Robert Stephenson out to the mound Tuesday night against the Cardinals.
He has a record of 2-2 with a 5.59 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP through his 29 innings this season and is still trying a pitch his way into a starting role in next year’s rotation for the Reds.
He didn’t have much luck in his last start against the Chicago Cubs, allowing four runs off of eight hits in just 3.2 innings of work.
Stephenson is still yet to pitch his way past the fifth inning in his young career.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Cincinnati is 3-7 through their last 10 games against a right handed starter.
- The Reds are only 3-8 in their last 11 games against the National League Central.
- The Cardinals have won 25 of the last 31 starts Wainwright has made in game 2 of a series.
- The Over is 9-3 in Wainwright’s last 12 starts.
Free Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
Monday night’s series opener is a perfect example that the Reds are not a simple push over. However, with the Cardinals need to win in order to stay alive in the postseason, I think winning game 2 will lead to St. Louis winning the series.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: St. Louis ML and game total over 8.5
Wainwright has been a different pitcher at home this season with a 2.92 ERA and a record of 6-4. Stephenson has a ERA of 10.80 when playing on the road and the Cardinals should have no problem getting to the youngster Tuesday night.
