The Cincinnati Reds visit the New York Mets today to close a three-game weekend set.
Cincinnati downed NYM 6-2 Friday after dropping two of three vs. the Mets in mid July. Overall, the Reds and NYM stand 2-2 this season head to head.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds are peaking at the right time as they eye another wildcard run. After four straight wins, Cincinnati trails San Diego by four games for the 2nd NL wildcard. The Reds sit seven games behind Milwaukee for the NL Central lead.
Sporting a capable lineup, Cincinnati adds 4.90 runs and allow 4.94.
Although the defense held Friday as Joey Votto homered in his seventh consecutive game and Jonathan India added three RBI to spark the Reds’ 6-2 win over NYM.
Vladimir Gutierrez brings his 5-3 record to the mound Sunday. The 25-year-old stumbled against the Mets July 19 allowing six earned runs, and three home runs, as the Reds fell 15-11.
While Gutierrez is 4-1 on the road this season, and helped spark a Cincinnati win vs. Chicago in his last outing, he is faded here until he proves he can handle NYM bats.
Overall, the Reds sport a mediocre 4.58 team ERA -with their afternoon starter offering a 4.75 earned run average.
New York Mets
While Cincinnati stock rises, New York has lost three of four to make the NL East race far more competitive than it should be. The Mets lead Philadelphia by 3.5 games as regular season time ticks.
Needing wins, tonight New York could use offensive firepower to boost its strong pitching. Overall, NYM boasts a 3.58 team ERA, but only 3.85 runs per game. The latter number ranks 28th leaguewide.
Runs were scarce during the Mets’ Friday loss, a loss which puts loud question marks on the early line odds for today’s meeting.
Marcus Stroman brings his excellent 2.63 ERA into this afternoon contest. Unfortunately, Stroman offers a 7-9 record mainly because of poor run support.
Stroman was dealt more bad luck after tossing five innings of two run ball July 26 vs. Atlanta. The Mets dropped that outing 0-2 to renew hope for a struggling pack of NL East contenders.

Cincinnati Reds vs. New York Mets MLB Prediction:
This is something of a crossroads series for each club’s playoff chances. And as their knotted head-to-head record indicates, Cincinnati and NYM are evenly matched.
The major question is which is stronger: Cincinnati offense or Mets pitching. Also, which side is more deeply flawed?
With Stroman on mound, expect NYM to do a little more from home and gain the slim win vs. Cincy as the total goes Under.
Take the Under.
