The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs are two of the hottest teams to start the season. Both teams are sitting atop the Central division. These two will play a lot this season, but this is the first H2H meeting.
Cincinnati has opened up the season by sweeping the Phillies (3-0) and winning a series against Pittsburgh (2-1). Chicago swept the Angels (2-0) and then followed that up with a series win against Arizona (3-1).
These teams played each other 19 times last season and the Reds won the season series (11-8). The Cubs were 6-4 at home against the Reds, though. Can the over hyped Cubs get a win against the Reds to start the season?
Brandon Finnegan will take the mound for the Reds. Finnegan opened the season in excellent form, pitching six solid innings. He allowed 2 ERs on just 3 hits and he struck out nine batters, but he only got a no decision.
The Reds are getting done offensively and defensively. Cincinnati rank 5th in runs scored (5.80 RPG) and 11th in runs allowed (3.40 RPG). The Reds are hitting for power too. They’re ranked 8th in HRs (7).
Joey Votto has yet to hit a home run and he’s batting just .174 through six games. Jay Bruce (.391 Avg.) and Brandon Phillips (.385 Avg.) are off to hot starts, but the early leader has been Eugenio Suarez.
Suarez is just 24 years old and has a bright future. He leads the team in batting average (.435), home runs (4), RBIs (9), OBP (.500) and hits (10). He’ll come back down to earth soon, but he’ll keep it going against the Cubs.
Jon Lester is starting for the Cubs tomorrow night. Lester won his season opener against the Angels and he was impressive. He pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
Losing Kyle Schwarber for the season was a huge blow, but the Cubs have plenty of depth. They’re still the favorites to win the Central division and they’ll look to prove why in this first series against the Reds.
Chicago ranks 1st in the majors in runs scored (7.0 RPG) and 4th in runs allowed (2.40 RPG). They also rank 2nd in OBP (.373). If the Cubs keep hitting the baseball this well, they’ll win plenty of games.
Dexter Fowler leads the team with a .526 batting average, while Anthony Rizzo leads the team in home runs (2) and RBIs (10).Once players like Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant start hitting, this line-up will be tough to stop.
MLB Betting Trends:
- Cubs are 4-0 in last 4 Lester starts against the Reds.
- Reds are 4-9 in last 13 H2H games played in Chicago.
- Cubs are 4-1 in last 5 H2H games.
- Over is 7-2 in last 9 H2H games.
Free Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs MLB Prediction:
Lester has been dominant against the Reds, so I’m betting on him and the Cubbies. The Cubs are also 4-1 in the last five starts for Lester when he has 5+ days of rest. With the game being in Chicago, I like this bet even more.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs -1.5 Run Line
The run line odds aren’t out yet, but I’ll be betting on the Cubs to win by -1.5 runs. The money line odds for the Cubs is -230, so I’m not interested in that. There’s no total out either, but I lean to the under.
