Narional League action gets underway Friday afternoon as the Cincinnati Reds visit the defending MLB champion Atlanta Braves.
This article was published well before Thursday’s contest between the Reds and Braves went final.
Atlanta is 4-1 in its last five home games vs. Cincinnati. The Braves open today’s meeting as -190 favorites, while the total sits at nine runs.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds fought hard, but just missed a wild card berth after faltering late and finishing 83-79 last fall. And though the team performed well this preseason, many experts expect a regression from Cincinnati following offseason roster turnover.
Most of that regression talk centers around Joey Votto’s age. With Votto being 38, the talking heads feel the slugger can no longer lead his club when most needed. However, the additions of Tommy Pham and Colin Moran lend Cincy a credible offensive look 1 thru 9.
The big question mark for today’s contest is whether 25-year-old rookie Reiver Sanmartin has the goods to keep Atlanta bats at bay. Sanmartin has begun his MLB journey with promise, compiling a 2-0 record (1.52) ERA in his cup of MLB coffee last year.
Atlanta Braves
First, a few words about Atlanta Braves baseball and life from your pal, The Line. When Line was a 13-year-old squiggle, he watched the Bravos cop the 1995 World Championship alongside his father in the family living room.
Being raised on good ol’ Jeebus & sports as core life tenets, Line felt a religulous overtaking as Bob Costas squawked something about ‘The team of the 90s finally having its title?’ Anyhow, after the franchise’s apex moment, Braves fever spread faster than COVID through The Line’s rustic haunts as its denizens donned Atlanta Braves vanity plates, t-shirts and foam tomahawks (that’d be considered un-pc now, though almost no one in the area would care).
Nothing then about Line’s native mill town, where Z-Bird, and the industrial stink reign supreme, didn’t gush over Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Bobby Cox, Greg Maddux, etc. etc. all offseason. Hell, generally a martial artist, The Line was so captivated by the moment that he played his only season of organized baseball in spring 96′, thus leading his team in outfield assists & stolen bases.Simply, baseball was God then in the deep south, and God was baseball.
Fast-forward from 1995 to 2021. With none of the same hoopla surrounding the franchise, Atlanta somehow shocked the field for another ‘chip. Following along on game cast’s Atari-like diamond -because cable’s off the table some months for this modest man of miniscule means- The Line felt a tinge of elation for his favorite childhood team’s success, but didn’t really notice or care if anyone in town celebrated like it was 1995 part deux. 26 years of life will break down a man’s spirit like that.
Regardless, The Line has mustered just enough of his 13-year-old self this afternoon to bring YOU, oh loyal sports fan, the very salt of our industrial pulse, a concise free betting primer for today’s meeting between Atlanta and the Big Red Machine.
While you can get a similar free pick at any number of sites, you are only getting the overt (notice, I said overt) middle-age angst here from The Line, daddy-o.
This preview was written a few hours before game one between Cincy and Atlanta. But, believe you me, the Braves will be emotionally spent from their championship-week festivities. This might offer the Reds stronger upset odds as we learn more about how the slightly re-made Braves operate.
One thing that is known is that oft-injured star Ronald Acuna Jr. is glad Matt Olson has replaced Freddie Freeman. Acuna never forgot about Freeman picking on him for wearing eye-shadow and a tilted cap during his rookie year.
To wit, Atlanta still boasts MLB’s best infield -and perhaps roster as Charlie Morton gets the mound nod today.
Morton finished 2021 14-6 with a 3.34 ERA.

Free Cincinnati Reds vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
I think Cincy looks good enough on paper to test Atlanta from Truist Park. The one variable I grapple with here is how well the rookie SP Sanmartin can handle a confident Braves batting order. We know Atlanta’s pitching is rock solid.
I’ll compromise with my sensibilities to take the Braves via ML for game two of this interesting early-season clash. Look for winning offense from Atlanta’s infield, as Morton and his supporting arms do just enough to blanket a solid Reds lineup on Fri.
