After storming out to a 23-10 start, the Chicago White Sox have proved their hot start was nothing more than a fluke.
The White Sox then fell to 30-30 just a month later after a horrid stretch from May 9th to June 9th.
This Sunday matinee game is basically the start of a new season for the White Sox.
They haven’t bought or sold too much and now all of the noise about buying or selling can come to close.
They now have to focus on making a push towards a wild card spot. Twins ace Ervin Santana won’t make that easy.
Despite his 3-9 record, Santana has been sharp lately – yielding three or fewer or runs in each of his last seven starts.
Chicago White Sox
When the White Sox appeared to be in a position to make a playoff run, they went out and got right hander James Shields from the San Diego Padres.
After getting roughed up in his first three starts with the White Sox – giving up six or more earned runs in each of the three, Shields has settled in giving up three or fewer runs in each of his last seven starts.
However, Shields has now become the topic of trade conversation again and has been scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday. The White Sox will turn to Carlos Rodon to see what he can do against the Twins.
Rodon hasn’t started since July 5th against the Yankees and sports a 2-7 record along with 4.50 ERA.
Rodon was supposed to be a key part of the White Sox rotation this year but has yet to live up to potential.
The conversations surrounding the Twins as the deadline has approached have obviously been centered around rebuilding. However, that doesn’t mean they were ready to deal their ace in Ervin Santana.
He’s a veteran, proven starter that makes sense to keep as you rebuild.
Santana has been very sharp of late – falling on the short side of a 2-0 loss to the Braves in his last start despite pitching a complete game yielding only 7 hits and 2 runs.
The Twins have dealt their leadoff man in Nunez who really proved to be quite the surprise this season after never putting up numbers anywhere near the ones he has thus far.
So the Twins made the right move in dealing him at his peak value.
The offense now though remains a prime example of a boom or bust lineup.
Power hitters Miguel Sano and Brian Dozier are two big parts of the offense that has the 6th most strikeouts in the majors and 17th most home runs.
Nunez was really the motor behind this Minnesota offense as he led the team in hits and stolen bases, tied for second in runs scored, tied for third in home runs, and second in total bases.
With Minnesota’s eyes on the future, the trade makes sense. But, it will only make the Twins’ 2016 campaign even more woeful going forward.

Free Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
The switch from Shields to Rodon makes this an entirely different game and an entirely different bet. Rodon has been pretty awful this season and could struggle with this boom or bust Twins lineup.
Santana will give the Twins a good chance at winning this game.
He has been lights out lately and doesn’t seem to be negatively affected by pitching in tight games frequently like some other quality pitchers on bad teams.
With Nunez out of the Twins lineup and with the White Sox lineup struggling over the last handful of games, the Under is the pick in this game.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Game total under 7
The Twins should find a way to win this one behind Santana while capitalizing on facing a weak pitcher in Rodon.
Also, if Shields or Sale is dealt, the feeling inside the White Sox clubhouse will be that they are selling on this season which may not sit well for a team that was in first place in mid-May.
