There is also a significant pitching wrinkle here. Bryan Hudson is technically getting the start, but he’s an opener, not a conventional starter expected to chew through six innings. Chicago has used him this way before and can turn the game over quickly to its deeper pitching options.
Chicago is chasing October; Kansas City is chasing the end of September. Motivation isn’t terribly difficult to locate.
Seth Lugo has to give the Royals length after Tuesday’s bullpen-burning 14-11 loss, and his recent work hasn’t inspired much confidence. Houston tagged him for four solo homers over five innings in his last start.
KC has lost five straight. The Chi-Sox have the better recent form, the stronger season series and considerably more riding on every remaining game.
