The White Sox are slumping having given up all of their early season work over the last couple of weeks. They have dropped from first to third sitting just above Detroit.
As they close this series they get a chance to create some breathing space. This team should be a contender all season long and is just going through a bit of a rut.
Chicago White Sox
Todd Frazier is tied for the Major League lead in homers with 17 but he has not been enough to spark an offense that has been below average all season.
When they acquired Frazier they thought they were getting a bash brother for Jose Abreu but the big Cuban has slumped. Sadly the whole lineup has, even Frazier is not even hitting his weight.
The potential is there though.
Speaking of potential Jose Quintana seems to finally be maxing his.
Pitching in the shadow of Chris Sale the Sox lefty is leading the team in ERA thus far and with five wins already the hardluck southpaw seems destined to be a double digit winner for the fist time in his career.
His numbers are better on the road too so this might be a tidy spot to back him even though the team is struggling on the whole.
Detroit Tigers
In terms of pure talent the Tigers are right there with the other teams in the competitive AL Central, they just cant seem to get everything going in the same direction this season.
The offense has a great balance right now with 4 regulars batting better than .300.
Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez remain the most potent threats with the Tigers still waiting for a homer binge from J.D. Martinez.
They are also waiting for Justin Upton to start justifying that big contract.
Justin Verlander lacks in consistency but when he is on he is still among the better hurlers in the AL. He is striking out more than a batter per inning and his hit rate is low.
In three of his last five starts he has given up 1ER or less but in the others he has been just serviceable.
It is hard to know what to expect from him from game to game but playing him at home has been the safer bet for sure.

Verlander has been better at home this season and that makes Detroit also a strong consideration. Their right heavy lineup could feast on Quintana who is more of an executor than a dominator. There is compelling reason to back either side.
