NL Central rivals will begin a three-game series on Monday evening when the Chicago Cubs visit the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
After pulling off a pair of upsets over Boston in an interleague matchup of historic franchises, the Cubs fell just short of extending their winning streak to five games with an 11-inning defeat on Sunday.
Offense hasn’t been the problem for the Cubs, who average a solid 4.42 runs per game on a .727 team OPS. Pitching is a different story, as the Cubs are fifth-worst in baseball with a 4.79 collective ERA including a mark of 4.55 from the bullpen.
Willson Contreras could be the best bat moved at the trade deadline as he’s posting a .910 OPS, 13 homers, 35, RBI and 46 runs scored. Ian Happ is also having a career year with an .848 OPS, eight homers, five stolen bases and 37 driven in.
Chicago has a lengthy IL, with first baseman Frank Schwindel (strained back), shortstop Nick Madrigal (strained groin), outfielder Michael Hermosillo (strained quad), outfielder Jason Heyward (knee inflammation) and rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki (sprained finger) out on the position player side.
Justin Steele is set to make his 16th start of his season in the opener. The 26-year-old is fighting to secure a spot in the rotation long-term, having gone 3-5 with a 4.39 ERA across 69.2 innings overall.
Getting All-Star pitcher Brandon Woodruff back to full health will be key for Milwaukee’s hopes of contending this season, and he enjoyed one of his best starts of the year in Sunday’s finale against Pittsburgh, throwing six scoreless innings.
A recent hot streak has helped Milwaukee climb into the top 10 at 4.65 runs per game on a .735 team OPS that is eighth-best overall this season. The pitching staff is also enjoying a strong campaign with a 3.81 collective ERA including a mark of 3.54 from the bullpen.
Rowdy Tellez is the most dangerous hitter for the Brewers with an .807 OPS, 16 homers and 53 RBI. Willy Adames is also enjoying another strong campaign with a .759 OPS, 16 home runs and 45 driven in despite missing some time on then IL.
Eric Lauer is scheduled to be on the mound for the 15th time, looking to continue a solid campaign as he’s gone 6-3 with a 4.02 ERA and 80:25 K:BB ratio across 78.1 innings.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Chicago is 19-16 ATS on the road
- Chicago O/U are 17-18 on the road
- Milwaukee is 17-17 ATS at home
- Milwaukee O/U are 18-15-1 at home
Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
After struggling for much of June, the Brewers have steadied themselves with the offense finally waking up some to complement what is a deep pitching staff.
They should be able to generate plenty of production against one of MLB’s worst staffs, and Lauer has shown enough upside to trust here.
Give me the Brewers on the run-line.
