The Chicago Cubs open their final regular-season series Friday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Chicago enters 88-71 after clinching a postseason berth Thursday, while Boston is 85-74 and already locked into an American League Wild Card spot.
Craig Counsell’s Cubs still have something on the table. Chicago can improve its Wild Card positioning over the final weekend, while Chad Tracy’s Red Sox know where they’ll be seeded when October begins.
Both teams have October baseball secured; Chicago still has a little more unfinished business before getting there.
The Cubs closed their home schedule by taking Thursday’s finale against Miami, although they scored only six runs during the three-game series. Boston dropped two of three to Cleveland and was shut out 1-0 Thursday.

Red Sox Stats
Boston enters the final weekend hitting .246 with a .319 on-base percentage. The offense hasn’t been particularly powerful, but the Red Sox have done enough around an excellent pitching staff to secure their postseason spot.
Pitching has carried much of the load.
Boston owns a 3.55 team ERA, third-best in baseball, while its bullpen has been even better with a 3.05 ERA. Aroldis Chapman has 35 saves with a 1.92 ERA, and Garrett Whitlock has posted a 1.72 ERA in a dominant setup role.
The lineup takes a significant hit without Willson Contreras. He leads Boston with 27 home runs and a .905 OPS but remains sidelined with a hand injury, leaving Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela among the bigger threats Chicago has to navigate.
Boston’s offense has gone especially quiet this week.
The Red Sox scored three runs while dropping two of three against Cleveland, and they’ve been held to one run or fewer in three of their last four games.
Cubs Stats
Chicago enters Friday with a .251 batting average and has been one of the National League’s more productive offenses this season. The Cubs have also shown plenty of power, although that hasn’t translated into much scoring this week.
Chicago punched its October ticket Thursday; the bats could still stand to pack themselves for the trip.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has supplied one of the biggest seasons in the lineup, reaching 40 stolen bases Thursday to complete a 40-homer, 40-steal campaign.
Alex Bregman has added 26 home runs while hitting .262.
Seiya Suzuki brings a six-game hitting streak into Fenway. He’s batting .262 over his last 10 games with two home runs and five RBIs, giving Chicago another right-handed bat to throw at Gamboa.
The pitching staff hasn’t matched Boston’s season-long numbers, and the bullpen has absorbed several injuries. That puts a little more pressure on Holmes to provide useful length in the opener.
Chicago is 42-36 away from Wrigley this season.
The Cubs also have more immediate postseason positioning at stake this weekend, so there isn’t much incentive to treat Friday afternoon like an exhibition with October waiting around the corner.
Cubs vs. Red Sox Pitching Matchup
Clay Holmes gets the opener for Chicago at 6-8 with a 3.25 ERA. His season numbers remain solid, but September has been considerably less friendly.
Holmes has allowed 17 runs across his last 15.1 innings.
That’s the concern for Chicago. He doesn’t need to dominate Boston, but the Cubs would certainly prefer something cleaner before handing the game to a bullpen that’s dealt with injuries down the stretch.
Gamboa gets the ball for Boston at 1-0 with a 1.16 ERA.
The left-hander has worked only 23.1 major-league innings, striking out 22 while posting a 1.06 WHIP. He’s been effective in that limited sample, but Chicago presents a deeper lineup than the ERA alone might suggest.

The matchup also gives the Cubs several right-handed bats to work with against Gamboa.

Neither offense is exactly arriving hot, so I want the side with more reason to push Friday.
Alec Gamboa has been excellent in limited work, but this is still a left-hander with only a small major-league sample facing a Cubs lineup with enough right-handed damage to make him work. Chicago doesn’t need to light up Fenway to cash this.
Give me the Cubs behind Holmes in a game where one timely swing could be plenty.
