By the time this game starts the trade deadline will have come and gone so it will be interesting to see if either team makes another move.

Both have been active but while the Sox have tried to upgrade the Mariners have more gotten rid of pieces that weren’t working anyway. Boston is currently in that second Wild Card spot but things are tight.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox have rare back to back 4 game series.

They split with the Angels over the weekend and this is the first of four in Seattle.

A chance to knock the M’s out, perhaps, if they can get on a roll. Rumour has it they are in on Carlos Beltran which might mean they have given up on finding more pitching help.

They are already the top offense in the Majors. I guess they would put him left field. It would be interesting.

One of the reasons they are so pitching hungry is that Eduardo Rodriguez has not given them as much as they hoped.

He hit bottom at Tampa, giving up 9ER in less than three innings but since then has been much more reliable.

His road numbers are staggeringly bad though – an ERA over 7 – and this Seattle team is pretty good in their everyday lineup.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners are the very definition of hanging in there.

A this is being written late on Sunday the M’s were imploding at Wrigley Field. This visit from Boston will be the fourth straight series against playoff contenders.

Do not get confused by the fact that they traded Wade Miley – the lefty has seen his ERA go up in four straight seasons.

Speaking of lefties James Paxton has been puzzling to Seattle, similar to Rodriguez above.

When he is on he can dominate, like when he gave up just 3 hits to the Blue Jays last week. It is easy to see why the M’s like him so much. He just has to find consistency.

In the bullpen I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about Edwin Diaz. He does not look like much but he is striking out 2 batters per inning.

The Sox may be starting to feel some pressure. This is a big series that could go either way and they do not get to start it with an ace on the hill. I think you have to stay away from Rodriguez the rest of the way.

He has not proven anything.

Paxton is interesting. It would have been logical to fade him at Toronto against a lineup that mashes lefties and you can make the same argument here.

Maybe he is picking up steam and is worth a shot.
