The Yankees improved to 2 – 0 to open the 2022 season in the Boogie Down against the Red Sox and a win tonight could give the Bombers a series sweep. A 4 – 2 home win on Saturday came on the strength of the big pitching effort from the Yankees bullpen on top of a nice outing for Luis Severino all things considered.
Severino had not started a Major League Baseball game since October 15, 2019, spanning 907 days between beginning a ball game on the slab. Severino only pitched a total of 6 innings in 2021 missing almost all of the last 2 years to injury so the Yanks hope they can get his arm and his confidence back to a high level.
The Red Sox are now in jeopardy of not only dealing with an opening season series sweep at the hands of the Yankees but the 0 – 3 division record isn’t exactly how Boston planned on opening 2022. The Sox will turn to Tanner Houck to hopefully get the team their first win of the season although he hasn’t exactly been one to shut down any teams lately. Hauck was an ugly 1 – 5 last season and he only threw 69 innings
Jordan Montgomery gets the opportunity to take the mound for the Yanks and many see his numbers from a year ago and wonder what he will be bringing to the table in 2022. Montgomery has a change-up that he constantly throws and his 6 – 7 record combined with a 3.83 ERA could use improving.
Game 2 Rewind
We all knew that Luis Severino was on a pitch count to start his season and he ended up throwing 65 pitches facing only 1 batter in the 4th inning before being pulled by Aaron Boone. Severino had a reasonably easy 1st inning tossing 13 pitches striking out two Sox but the pitch count mounted in the 2nd inning.
The Sox forced Severino to throw 31 pitches raising his count to 44 balls thrown through only 2 IP so the writing was on the wall as to how soon Boone would go back to his bullpen. The Yankee bullpen pitched 7 IP in the opening day win that went 11 innings and it was going to take 6 more innings from the bullpen today to get it done for the Yanks.
The Sox had to wait until only 45 minutes before game time to announce if Xander Boegarts would be able to start or not. I mentioned that it appeared he tweaked a hammy but he came out and said he feels 130% so we have to trust that I suppose. He certainly looked all right in the field although he didn’t provide much of an offensive spark.
Verdugo was once again a standout both offensively and defensively for the Sox although he was about the only light on the field. Nick Pivetta looked great through 3 innings for Boston as he only allowed a Gallo hit off the wall the first time through the order but he ran himself out at second making a poor decision to try to sneak in a double.
Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton have both homered in the first two games of the new campaign. Stanton’s blast made the game 4 – 2 in the 4th inning and neither team was able to change that result. Stanton has now homered in 6 straight games against Boston including last year’s Wildcard game at Fenway that ended with Boston moving on to the Divisional Round.
Game Notes
Remember I told you Higashioka bashed 7 HR to lead all players during spring training? Remember I told you he will be doing nothing remotely like that when the season starts and that is the case. Pitchers are not about to let him be the one who decides a close game because he’s not a good enough hitter, to begin with. If he bats 220 I will shit myself!
Anyway, Montgomery is going to throw 55 sliders tonight on ESPN and the world will watch him pick at corners throwing 83, 83, 83, and oh, he’ll sneak in an 84 MPH slider, whoa!

Free Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees MLB Prediction:
I like this over because Tanner Hauck is a disaster and Montgomery is so predictable that they should both barely get through 4 IP. I see 4 – 4 in the 6th and we only need that 9 to cash us out. SOLD!
