A matchup of Cy Young winners takes shape in Cleveland as the Indians welcome in the Red Sox on Monday afternoon.
David Price and Corey Kluber headline one of the best pitching matchups on the day with the weather calling for cold temps, making things even harder on pitchers.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox have just sat around in the AL East over the past two years as they shipped away their veterans and retooled their team. They cleaned house 2 years ago in preparation for this 2016 season.
Boston went out and signed David Price in the offseason to boost their rotation.
Price was nearly flawless with the Blue Jays when he was shipped there at the deadline. He went 9-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 11 starts and that earned him $217 million this offseason.
Also worth noting, INF Travis Shaw has over taken the 3B role. He’ll get the starting nod over Pablo Sandoval, who came into camp and struggled this spring, ultimately sealing his fate on the bench.
Cleveland Indians
The Indians have put together 3 straight winning seasons under Terry Francona. They’ve consistently been in a playoff race and last year they fell short of the second Wild Card spot.
Cleveland will come into opening day without two of their starting outfielders, as the loss of Michael Brantley really headlines everything. Brantley isn’t far from coming back, but rushing him was not an option.
The Indians went out and signed a compliment of players, as they’ll have a solid mix of veterans and younger guys.
Mike Napoli, Juan Uribe, and Rajai Davis showcase that group and the addition of Marlon Byrd late in camp proved to be a good one when Lonnie Chisenhall went down.
The Indians will turn to Corey Kluber, who comes in off a bad year record wise, but he still pitch just as good as ever. Run support was never there for him in 2015.
