Historic franchises will meet for the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon when the Boston Red Sox take on the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have turned around their season and do look like a better team, but they have not played their best ball of late and that has to change starting on Saturday.
Throughout the course of any season, teams are going to have periods of not playing all that well and that is understandable, but that does not mean what they did in their last series and on Friday was disappointing.
Heading into the season, a major question mark with this team was their bullpen and that made a lot of sense. It is not a particularly strong group and that is never something a team wants to hear.
So far, the pen has cost them on multiple occasions and the reality of the situation is that the front office has to improve that part of their game. If they do not, it will be very telling as to what they feel about the direction the Sox are headed in.
There have been far too many instances this season in which Boston played a good game for most of the day and was not able to hold on because of the relievers imploding. With the kind of talent they have on offense, they will still win some games, but they will not get to where they want to be if that area is not fixed to a degree.
Boston was able to jump off to a 4-0 lead on Friday and things were looking good, but they did not get the job done. A combination of Hansel Robles not doing his job and the offense going cold after the early success is what did them in during the opener.
I know it is one game and there is still a lot of baseball to be played, but their last loss just is not acceptable. When you have a team like this going against one of the worst in the sport, the expectation is that you are able to hold 4 run leads and do more damage as the game goes on, which clearly was too much to ask for them.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs might fool their fans once in a while and have them start believing and then they go back to their losing ways.
I do not think this team is totally hopeless, but I also do not love their chances of r
When it comes to reasons as to why they have performed so poorly, I could give a laundry list, but I do not need to. Their lack of strong play is really simple.
Chicago is a team that lacks front-end talent on both sides of the field and it is evident when they play teams that can expose that. There are some nice pieces here and there but is nothing to the point where it strikes fear into other teams.
Although they won the World Series in 2016, we all saw how long it took to get to the point and all the losing in the previous seasons. Forget a title. I think you will keep on seeing this team lose a ton of games for a while before they are even remotely relevant.
Until they get some real improvements with the hitters and pitchers, I do not expect any big changes from them. When an organization puts this kind of team out there on a nightly basis, it is impossible to expect the results to be all that good.
Chicago will really have their hands full in this series with the Red Sox. After playing a terrible team in the Reds, the level of difficulty is much higher here and if they are not careful, it could be an ugly series for them.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Red Sox are 7-0 in their last 7 games following an off day.
- The Red Sox are 20-6 in their last 26 overall.
- The Cubs are 5-11 in their last 16 games after scoring 5 runs or more in the previous game.
- The Cubs are 16-36 in their last 52 home games.
Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago Cubs MLB Prediction:
While the Red Sox are obviously the far better team, this is a nightmare pitching matchup for Boston, which continues to be very thin on depth with the injuries to the rotation. Thompson is enjoying a breakout season, and the Cubs’ offense is capable enough to do damage against the spot starter.
Offense has not been the problem for the Cubs, who are 13th with a 103 wRC+ with exciting young players like the rookie Morel providing a big spark. Seabold has really struggled in MLB action with nine earned runs including four homers allowed across 7.2 career innings, and he was hit hard earlier in the week in his 2022 debut.
Thompson has flashed a lot of talent this season with a 79 ERA-/95 FIP- in his first full campaign while striking out 23% of opposing batters. Back Chicago to pull off the upset with one of its few effective pitchers on the hill.
