The Baltimore Orioles open their final series of the season Friday against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Baltimore enters 78-81 under Craig Albernaz, while Aaron Boone’s Yankees are 92-67 and locked into the AL’s top Wild Card position.
The Orioles arrive with some momentum after sweeping three games from Toronto. Baltimore scored 16 runs in the series, with Pete Alonso homering twice as the Orioles kept alive their chance to finish at .500.
Baltimore has pride and .500 left to chase; New York already knows where October begins.
New York finished its series with Tampa Bay by winning the final two games, including Thursday’s 6-4 victory. The Yankees can’t change their postseason seed this weekend, but warming up the bats before October wouldn’t be the worst idea Aaron Boone has heard.

Power remains the calling card for New York. The Yankees enter the final weekend with 223 home runs, while Ben Rice has developed into the biggest source of damage in the middle of the lineup.
Rice has 39 home runs, 95 RBIs and an .888 OPS. He’s also scored 100 runs while posting a .360 on-base percentage, giving New York much more than an all-or-nothing power bat.
Luis García Jr. brings another dangerous left-handed swing.
He’s hitting .277 with 30 home runs, while Cody Bellinger has provided another steady bat around Rice. Add Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s combination of speed and pop, and there are several ways for this lineup to make Beck’s run support less of a concern.
The pitching staff has been New York’s bigger strength.
The Yankees carry one of the American League’s better run-prevention groups into the postseason, and that becomes particularly useful Friday with an inexperienced starter on the mound. Beck doesn’t necessarily need to work deep if Boone sees trouble coming.

Baltimore’s offense has produced 194 home runs while drawing 576 walks, but a .233 team batting average helps explain some of the inconsistency. The Orioles have been much better this week, scoring 16 runs during their sweep of Toronto.
Alonso gives Baltimore one swing that can wreck a pitching plan, and Beck can’t afford free traffic.

That lineup has helped Baltimore climb back toward .500 after a season that got away from it, and the Orioles now need to sweep New York to finish with a winning record.
Baltimore’s pitching staff enters with a 4.09 ERA.
The bigger advantage Friday comes from Rogers, who gives the Orioles a much more established starter than New York has on the other side. If Baltimore is going to steal the opener, this is the obvious path.

Trevor Rogers gets the ball for Baltimore at 10-11 with a 4.07 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 153 while carrying a 1.18 WHIP, giving the Orioles a veteran starter for their final trip to Yankee Stadium.

Brendan Beck starts for New York at 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA.
The ugly number comes with a very important qualifier: Beck has pitched only 7.2 major-league innings. He’s allowed seven earned runs with five strikeouts, so there simply isn’t enough work here to treat the ERA like a finished scouting report.

Baltimore owns the starting-pitching advantage on experience alone.
New York counters with the deeper lineup, home field and a bullpen Boone can reach for quickly if Beck struggles. That makes the opening innings considerably more important for the Yankees than the season records might suggest.

Here is my Orioles Yankees free pick: I’m taking Yankees ML -132. New York has already secured the top AL Wild Card spot, but this price is reasonable at Yankee Stadium against an Orioles club trying to finish a disappointing season on a high note.
Brendan Beck’s 8.22 ERA isn’t exactly comforting, although we’re dealing with only 7.2 innings. The Yankees also have the bullpen depth to get aggressive if Beck starts handing out souvenirs early.
Beck makes this uncomfortable, but New York’s lineup and bullpen give me more ways to survive it.
Baltimore has the clear starting-pitching edge with Trevor Rogers. Still, the Yankees have beaten the Orioles eight times in 10 meetings this season, and New York brings considerably more power into a ballpark that rewards it.
At this number, I’ll trust the deeper lineup and home bullpen rather than asking Rogers to carry Baltimore through nine innings.
