OPENING DAY!
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles were the second-worst team in baseball last year, winning just three more games than the vaunted Detroit Tigers. Their very-respectable-for-them 54 wins were produced by finishing 25th in team OPS, 30th in team ERA, and 26th in team WHIP.
The Orioles will have their work cut out for them in 2020. The team finished 26th in team OPS and 19th in team ERA during the preseason.
Tommy Milone is the starting pitcher for opening day, making Baltimore the seventh different MLB team Milone has pitched for. In 2019 with Seattle, Milone posted a 4-10 record with a 5.00 FIP and a 1.119 WHIP.
Boston Red Sox
The 2019 Red Sox season was, perhaps, the most disappointing season in franchise history. Directly following 119 wins and a World Championship title, the team finished 19 games back of the Yankees in the AL East and missed the playoffs by a considerable margin.
The 2020 Red Sox will, most likely, not be very good. While they still have almost every piece (don’t say it) of 2019’s lineup, which finished fifth in the league in team OPS (.806) and produced the fourth-most runs in baseball (901), their pitching staff has been entirely decimated.
Chris Sale is out for the season due to injury, David Price was traded, and Eduardo Rodriguez is currently out due to COVID. That leaves Nathan Eovaldi as the opening day starter with a poor supporting cast in the bullpen.
Eovaldi has spent most of his time in Boston in the bullpen, but has managed some fairly respectable numbers as a starter in his career. In two seasons with the Yankees, he posted a 4.11 FIP over 279 innings with 218 strikeouts and a 1.387 WHIP.
Free Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction: High-scoring opening day matchup
While, apparently, the under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between the two at Fenway, it always feels like the Orioles and the Red Sox play high scoring games.
I’m not basing this pick entirely on Gut Feel, however. The pitching matchup is what intrigues me most. Both starting pitchers have average-to-below-average résumés, and don’t play well when pitted against the opposing lineups. Check out these stats:
-Tommy Milone career vs. Red Sox: 5 GS, 0-3 record, 9.26 ERA, 2.057 WHIP, 24 earned runs on 31 hits over 23.1 innings
-Nathan Eovaldi career vs. Orioles: 9 GS, 3-1 record, 5.62 ERA, 1.704 WHIP, 26 earned runs on 50 hits over 41.2 innings.
Not to mention how bad both of these bullpens are…
The Red Sox can score runs in bunches and I expect the Orioles to snag a few on this poor Boston pitching staff. 10 runs seems like a lock to me…
