The Orioles might still find themselves in the basement of the AL East but confidence and momentum might not be higher after the comeback they put together in Friday night’s opener. Coming into the seventh inning trailing 8-2, they put together an incredible rally across three straight innings to stun the Red Sox and quiet Fenway Park.
Offensively, Baltimore has slowly started to turn a corner, especially after Friday night’s output over the last few innings. Overall though, this group is difficult to know what to expect on a nightly basis. They rank in the bottom five of baseball in nearly every offensive category and even after scoring 12 runs on Friday, will be hard-pressed to replicate that performance.
Austin Hays (.288 average) leads the way atop the order, while Anthony Santander (8 HRs, 24 RBI) tries to provide the power.
Boston Red Sox
Boston couldn’t have started the weekend series any stronger, scoring six runs across the first two innings on Friday, only to watch the bullpen struggle down the stretch and give away the series opener.
The Red Sox still have seemed to turn things around of late though, having gone 7-3 in their last 10 games. They still sit in fourth place in the AL East standings but are 2.5 games ahead of the Orioles and want to continue to move further from the basement, not closer towards it.
Boston’s offense remains one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball and even though their eight runs weren’t enough on Friday, they should be able to continue to find success in this one. They rank seventh in baseball in runs scored per nine innings and tenth in fewest strikeouts while ranking third in batting average.
Despite the poor record so far this season, the Red Sox have been able to remain one of baseball’s healthiest teams. They have their full complement of position players but continue to be without two starters and a reliever as the weekend continues.
