Two of the more disappointing teams in baseball from a season ago begin their seasons Friday as the Orioles hit the road to take on their division foes from Boston.
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles have been in rebuilding mode for the last several seasons, but showed some brief signs of life in the shortened 2020 season. Baltimore managed to climb out of the cellar in the AL East last year thanks to the progression of some key young players.
Baltimore is now in their third season of rebuilding and has assembled some quality talent. Players like Ryan Mountcastle, Anthony Santander and DJ Stewart look to make continued strides. Santander put together a quality season, hitting just above .260 with 11 home runs. Trey Mancini returns to the field as well and will join versatile infielders Freddy Galvis and Maikel Franco.
John Means is the starter here for the second year in a row for the home opener. After a promising 2019 season, Means went 2-4 and had a 4.53 ERA in 10 starts. His ERA was just over 2 on the road, however, and he’ll look to get back at Boston after the Red Sox torched him last year.
Baltimore will need some serious growth out of its bullpen to climb up the standings this year. The pitching staff for the O’s is vastly inexperienced and will have to learn on the fly in 2021.
Boston Red Sox
Boston is a bit of a mystery team at this point. Following a disastrous 2020 season that saw them fall to the bottom of the 2020 AL East standings, the Red Sox project as a .500 team. This is a team that could be a spoiler for the top dogs or fall right back to where they were a year ago
Boston’s goal was to go after veterans in the off-season to try to add experience to the clubhouse. Kike Hernandez, Marwin Gonzalez and Hunter Renfroe join the team. Bobby Dalbec will provide a good mixture of youth to the team and is the prospect to watch following a seven home run, .300 average season.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the start here, as the 31-year-old starter looks to put together another decent season. The right-hander went 4-2 overall record to go along with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in nine starts. He had an ERA of 2.00 in Fenway last year and did well against Baltimore.
