The Aussies stuck with Japan for a lot longer than the people who made them 10-to-1 thought they would but three late runs for Japan were the difference.
Limiting Cuba’s power will be a key in the Tokyo Dome, where the ball can really fly. If Australia can keep the ball on the ground, it has a shot to stay with Cuba right up until the end.
A win would be a massive step for Australian baseball. Cuba is a little down this year and the Aussies are well-coached. They may just be up to the challenge.
Cuba also lost to Japan and defeated China, which sets this one up as a nice winner-take-all finale that determines who advances with the Japanese from Pool B.
I’m thinking the power of Cepeda and Despaigne in the middle may be devastating for Australia. Those two were on base five times in eight plate appearances the last time Cuba was in action against China.
Roel Santos (.571) and Alexander Ayala (.375) collected three hits apiece from the top of the lineup in that one too. And a day off should have the Cubans ready to rock today.
Lazaro Blanco will get the start for Cuba, which used four pitchers to one-hit China two days ago. With the bullpen also rested and ready to go in an elimination game, Cuba looks to be in good shape and is the rightful favorite.
Free Australia vs. Cuba WBC Prediction:
Cuba has superior talent in the most dynamic parts of the game. They hit for more power, run faster and throw harder. But Australia is fundamentally sound and a most dangerous underdog. But because they are a little dangerous, they may be a little overpriced.
I’ll take the power and the Cubans.
4* Free WBC Betting Pick: Cuba -220
Australia took a small step forward this year, but things haven’t changed drastically enough to keep Japan and Cuba out of Pool E, joining Israel and the Netherlands.
