These are two of the worst teams in the Majors this season. Atlanta knew they would be dreadful but the Padres had an outside hope that respectability was just around the corner.

They seemed to have already given up though, shipping James Shields back to AL, and paying for the right to do so.

This is a rare series they are going to be favoured.

Atlanta Braves

The Braves have the worst record in the NL and by a pretty wide margin. Their ineptitude can be summed up by the fact that they are the worst scoring team in all of baseball.

Hard to win the way they scrounge for runs. It might be time for them to deal the lone bat they have in their lineup that anyone would want – Freddie Freeman. I don’t know why anyone would pitch to him.

On any other team Aaron Blair would probably be back in the Minors but the Braves are running him out there hoping he can learn on the fly.

His numbers are not good but they are somewhat skewed by an outing in which he gave up 9ER in 1.1 innings against Pittsburgh.

He has been very up and down in his short career but will not exactly be facing a murderer’s row in San Diego.

San Diego Padres

I guess you have to give the Padres some credit for pulling the chute pretty early, sorry fans. Getting rid of Shield could certainly be addition by subtraction though.

The pitching has evaporated for this club this season and getting someone else in there might be a help not a hindrance.

The offense is no prize and you have to wonder if they are putting out feelers to see if anyone will bite on a resurgent Matt Kemp.

He leads with 14 homers.

Colin Rea is in just his second year and it is clear what his problem is, walks. He is not getting hit too badly but when there are lots of extra guys on base it is easy to get burned.

Rea has been better at home than on the road but it is all relative with a talent like this. He is coming off one his worst outings against Seattle but this might be a good spot.

You can make a similar argument for the Padres with Rea on the hill. The extra advantage is that they will be the home team obviously. Someone is going to win this one.

Often in a battle of the Dregs I go for the better payoff which should be Atlanta in this one but they are just too scary right now to back in almost any situation. I imagine SD will be around -125 when this number comes out which is not too bad.
