Two teams that are expected to contend for National League playoff spots will square off on Thursday as the Atlanta Braves visit the San Diego Padres.
The defending champion Braves have gotten off to a slow start, just 3-4 to start the season including a 3-1 loss on Wednesday to the Nationals. San Diego has done a bit better, sitting at 4-3 but also come in following a defeat, 2-1 to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday afternoon.
Manny Machado homered and tied his career high with five hits, as the Padres routed the Braves 12-1 in front of a sold out crowd in the team’s home opener Thursday night.
Adam Duvall hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning to help Atlanta bounce back from an ugly loss to beat San Diego 5-2 on Friday night.
Ian Anderson pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning, Matt Olson hit one of Atlanta’s three homers and the Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 Saturday.

The Atlanta Braves are already getting a taste of what it is like to try and defend your title as they have come out and taken teams’ best effort so far. Atlanta is 3-4 as we head towards the second weekend of the season.
Despite their 3-4 start, the Braves are 8th in the majors in batting average at .255 so far this season. They are, however, 19th in runners left on base this season which explains some of the team’s struggles.

San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres will look to bounce back after a disappointing end of their 2021 season, falling from a top Wild Card spot all the way to out of the playoffs.
The Padres fell to 4-3 as their lineup ran into the buzzsaw that is SF Giants ace pitcher Logan Webb (1-0). Webb, who hasn’t lost a game since May 5th of last season, pitched 8 innings and allowed 4 hits and just 1 run against the scuffling Padres lineup.
First Baseman Eric Hosmer has been productive early in the season for San Diego. Olsen is hitting a team high .381 batting average with a .435 OBP. Left Fielder Jurickson Profar has been a big hitter in the lineup with a team high 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s on just 6 hits.

The Braves are playing well offensively, scoring more than four runs per game. They’ve hit the ball well against right-handers and they’ve had a lot of success against Darvish, who is winless in five starts against them. He didn’t make it past the second inning in his last start after giving up nine runs, so expect the Braves to score a lot of runs in this game.
With the exception of their 12-run performance in the first game of the series, San Diego’s bats have been pretty quiet, with the team scoring only four runs in their last two games.
Things won’t get easier in this game because Elder looked impressive in his first career start, giving up three runs, and won’t have trouble keeping their offense in check.
