Atlanta Braves
The Braves dropped another series over the weekend, as they fell in 2 of 3 to the Kansas City Royals.
However, Atlanta does have something to build off of as their starting pitching has really stepped things up. The Braves pitching staff has an ERA of just 2.28 over the past 9 games. In that span, they’ve struck out 38 batters and walked just 13. This is the first real bright spot the Braves have shown all year long, as this team has been horrific offensively.
Trying to continue that solid pitching trend, the Braves will send out RH Williams Perez. Perez was stellar last time out as he allowed just 1 run on 2 hits in 8.0 innings of work. He was recalled from Triple A after Atlanta traded Jhoulys Chacin away.
Perez was injured last year, but showed plenty of good signs as he went 4-0 prior to going down with a foot injury.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates haven’t enjoyed the start of May by any means.
Pittsburgh has gone just 4-8, but will have a chance to get things back on track with this 10 game homestand. With how competitive the NL Central is, they cannot afford to fall back any further. There is now an 8.0 game gap between them and the first place Cubs.
One Pirate who has enjoyed May has been Andrew McCutchen. He’s hit .300 after finishing off April with just a .226 batting average.
Pittsburgh will send out LH Jonathon Niese, who despite having a winning record, has given up a lot of runs this year. His ERA sits well above 5 and it’s been thanks to the long ball. He’s allowed 10 homeruns this season, but does have some good success against the Braves in his career. He has gone 9-6 in 22 starts against them as his ERA is at a mere 3.08.
