If you are not going with the obvious choice in the National League then you are probably picking the Braves. They have upgraded their pitching in the hope of more postseason success. Philly has invested big in the last couple of seasons and has nothing to show for it…yet. They are not going to let the Braves and Mets have all the fun.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves are a hot pick for good reason. Their lineup is great and ther is no reason for it to backslide with players like Freddie Freeman in their prime and Ronald Acuna Jr still developing. They have one of the best lineups in the National League. Outfielder Christian Pache looks like the next great prospect to graduate to the Majors and he will be a nice compliment in an already strong outfield.
Pitching depth was a challenge last season but they have improved that too. Based on last year’s production Max Fried deserves the nod for the opening day start. He did not lose a game during the regular season, posting a 7-0 record with a stellar 2.25 ERA. He is probably not that good but he gives them a great chance to compete. The bullpen might not have recognizable names but it is hardly a weakness.
Philadelphia Phillies
Philly might be playoffs or bust this season. They are good enough to get there but they have to stay healthy. Bryce Harper has put up good numbers for the Phiillies but they have not been able to get over the hump. They have power throughout the lineup and the best catcher in the game in JT Realmuto. That is enough to compete.
I love Aaron Nola. He has great stuff and is somewhat of a throwback in that he can actually pitch deep into games sometimes. He was nearly unhittable at home last season and he is going to give his all to make sure that things are different for Philly this year. The bullpen was terrible last season. If they are that bad again the Phillies will be sunk.
