The Los Angeles Dodgers have ensured that they will play all 3 home games in the 2021 NLCS after winning game 3, 6 – 5. With a massive comeback down 5 – 2 in the 8th inning, the Dodgers bats came alive to bring home 4 runs and now we have ourselves a series!
The obvious hero is Clay Bellinger, and his 3-run shot to tie the game at 5 – 5 with the pressure on in a big situation. The home crowd was left sitting on their hands all night after being held scoreless after the first inning until breaking out in the 8th inning to ultimately take the win.
How about Mr. Jansen? You can now call him MR. JANSEN after striking out the heart of the Braves batting order in the 9th to shut the door! Holy impressive, Batman! Jensen has struck out 12 of the 17 batters he has faced in the post-season ensuring the Dodgers seal wins late.
The Dodgers had never won a post-season game down by 3 runs past the 7th inning until Tuesday night. It’s been a playoff full of history-making for this team so far after taking out long-time rivals in the NLDS.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves let it all slip away and I will admit I was hurt by it since I offered the Braves and that jiggy +150 to win game 3. So, they had their chances, and finally, Freddie Freeman woke up after looking so bad for 2 nights at home to open the series.
Freeman went 3 for 4 with a walk in game 3 bringing his confidence back up after so many disappointing strikeouts in games 1 and 2. Ironically, the wins came when he was cold and he was the only hot bat in Atlanta’s lineup.
The Dodgers held on to a 2 – 0 lead until the Braves bats came alive in the top of the 4th inning. Batting around the order, Atlanta found 4 runs and a bases-loaded walk to Eddie Rosario drove Walker Buehler out of the game. Ironically, Freeman’s only out of the night came with the bases loaded in the 4th inning. Imagine if he had come through in that spot to increase the lead which would have broken the game wide open?
That would have been the time to find any of those other hits Freeman had all night to break out of his slump.
Regardless, the Braves now need to calm down the bullpen and not let this series turn from up 2 – 0 to down 3 – 2 and going home for games 6 and/or 7.
The Braves are big underdogs again as they have been in all 4 games of this series, so the line setters have made it clear what they expect to happen. We will likely see Atlanta as a dog in game 5 here on Thursday night too.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers seem to know how to jump out to a 2 – 0 early lead, don’t they? Get Mookie on first and let Corey Seager knock a ball into the outfield stands and then it’s “Let’s play ball” from there!
So, it worked enough to keep them in game 3 long enough to come up with the huge 8th inning festival that helped secure the series goes at least 5 games.
That also gives the Dodgers 3 home games to really make a statement and that makes this one helluva scary game for Atlanta. Julio Urias will get the nod for game 4 although he has only been seen out of the bullpen since his start against the Giants in the NLDS. His last outing in Atlanta didn’t work out too well and that is why you see the 18 ERA on his name.
Keep in mind, we are talking about a 20-game winner this year so he is not some dude out of the bullpen making a spot start here. This is his game to win or lose and Dave Roberts will trust him long enough to not blow through his bullpen again.
Justin Turner put his neck issues aside and played as long as he could before leaving the game, but he is certainly struggling to hit the ball. It would behoove Roberts to just leave Bellinger at first and let him rest now that he has this extra game at home in his pocket for Thursday night.
Mookie Betts also came up big with the winning hit that finished the 8th inning rally which gave the Dodgers the lead. Betts and Seager are simply taking over this series now, so I expect big things from both of them… Again!
