Braves vs. Astros Gameday
Atlanta comes into Saturday’s game at 90-64 after beating Houston 6-2 in Friday’s series opener. The Braves also clinched a postseason berth with the victory and hold a five-game lead in the NL East.
Houston dropped to 77-77 with the loss and is now tied with Texas atop the AL West. The Astros have gone 4-6 over their last 10, so this isn’t exactly the ideal time for their offense to start misplacing runs.
Atlanta punched its October ticket Friday while Houston’s playoff race became considerably less comfortable.
Daikin Park hosts Game 2 of the series Saturday night. Atlanta has won the only meeting between these teams this season, with Friday’s four-run margin giving the Braves the early edge in the three-game set.
Houston still has plenty at stake, while Atlanta can now focus on finishing off the NL East race.

Grant Holmes gets the ball for Atlanta with a 9-5 record and a 3.50 ERA. He has recorded 110 strikeouts with a 1.30 WHIP, giving the Braves another steady option in a rotation that has helped carry them into the postseason.

Grant Holmes gives Atlanta a solid starting point, and the Braves’ pitching staff has been one of the better groups in baseball this season. Houston has enough power to make any under uncomfortable, but lately the lineup has spent too many innings turning baserunners into stranded tourists.
Hayden Wesneski also gives the Astros a legitimate chance to keep Atlanta under control. He doesn’t need to dominate; keeping the Braves from stacking crooked innings would put this total in a good spot.
Houston’s offense has picked a lousy time of year to become this difficult to trust.
Atlanta clinched a postseason berth Friday, while Houston is fighting to stay atop the AL West. That should keep both clubs leaning on their best available bullpen arms if this remains close.
I don’t need another 6-2 final to cash this.
A competitive start from both pitchers and another ordinary Houston offensive night should be enough. Under 8.5 is the play.
