The Atlanta Braves have secured game 1 and now have the early lead in the World Series against the Houston Astros. Game 2 comes on Wednesday night and the Braves send their ace, Max Fried, to the bump to try and give Atlanta a 2 – 0 lead before returning home for games 3, 4, and possibly game 5 if need be.
We all got to witness history on the 3rd pitch of Tuesday’s game as Jorge Soler homered becoming the first man to smash a dinger in the first AB of the World Series. The Braves went on to make more history as they scored at least 1 run in the first 3 innings of the game which had never been done before either.
Neither of the game 1 starters, Framber Valdez nor Charlie Morton, made it out of the third inning of the game but for different reasons. Charlie Morton had to leave the game with a broken fibula on his landing ankle and Valdez simply pitched like shit and got yanked after only 52 pitches.
The Braves can now play a little looser with a game 1 win in their pockets as the split on the road to start the World Series is guaranteed, at least. Now, the obvious goal is to take control of the series before heading back to Truist Park for 3 games if need be.
Charlie Morton is unfortunately done for the series and that takes his experience out of the equation for the rest of the show. That will put even more emphasis on how Fried approaches this game knowing he will possibly have to pitch in a big game up the road again.
The Braves bats were in form and ready to go against Valdez and knocking him out of the game early was something Dusty Baker simply didn’t want to happen. The Braves knocked out Valdez after only 52 pitches with no one out in the 3rd inning after Rosario got on base and Adam Duvall smacked a 2-run line drive out of the yard. That ball is still screaming, by the way.
Atlanta definitely took advantage of the AL rules adding a bat to the lineup pounding out 6 runs in game 1. Usually, the Braves infield is responsible for creating the damage but Adam Duvall and Eddie Rosario along with Jorge Soler were responsible for most of the production on Tuesday night.
The Braves infield during the regular season was ridiculous and I wanted to point out some of th stats they put up this season.
Freddie Freeman batted .325 since May 9th and he put up a .930 OPS during that time span.
Ozzie Albies smacked 30 homers out of the park and his 77 extra-base hits were second in all of baseball.
Dansby Swanson set shortstop records for homers and rbi during the regular season (27 & 88) and Austin Riley batted .303 and led the team with 33 dingers coming into the post-season.
Max Fried will have plenty of pressure to pitch well now that Morton is down for the series. The Braves are 2 – 1 in his 3 playoff starts although the last time he took the mound the Dodgers pounded him out of the game.
Fried hasn’t pitched in 6 days which should give that curveball of his some nice snap with velocity behind it. He considers his curveball among the best in the game so he better have it working in game 2.
The Astros were favored to take the series at -145 and favored to take game 1 at home as well but so far both of those propositions are to be questioned. I will admit, I posted the Stros to take this series in 6 games so you damn well know I need them to win game 2 tonight.
The big problem I see now is Valdez was a mess and Urquidy has question marks all around him too so this could get tricky. Urquidy has only made 1 post-season start and he got absolutely trashed after only 1 2/3 innings by the Red Sox.
The Astros infield was just as key to the success of this team as it was for Atlanta and the post-season stats are impressive.
Last night, the Astros infield made their 68th start together in the playoffs, easily an MLB record and it isn’t even close. Yuri Gurriel has hit 6 HR with 33 RBI and Jose Altuve has hit 21 HR along with 47 RBI.
Carlos Correa has blasted 18 HR in the playoffs and his 55 RBI lead this team while Alex Bregman has smacked 12 bombs of his own over this 5 year run of playoff showings.
The Braves bullpen kept the Astros in check after Morton had to leave the game, but we’ve been seeing them do that all season long.
The Astros know how pivotal this game is because down 0 – 2 with the possibility of 3 games in Atlanta might make this series tough to take. Naturally, there are plenty of people rooting against the Astros for the scandal that helped earn their 2017 title.
The line setters seem to be on the fence for game 2 with basically an even line being shown.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Braves are 15-3 in their last 18 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Braves are 8-2 in their last 10 playoff games.
- The Astros are 4-10 in their last 14 interleague home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Astros are 0-5 in their last 5 World Series home games.
Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
We are going with this total and not concerning ourselves with who takes the win in game 2. That small left-field wall and these bats should combine to give us a show with plenty of balls finding the outfield seats. Grab the Over 8.5 and make it rain!
