The Braves will be in Houston to kick off the 2021 World Series. The first pitch is set for Tuesday at 8:09 ET.
Charlie Morton is going for the Braves and Framber Valdez gets the nod for the Astros.
These clubs did not meet each other in the regular season. This should be a very good series.
Atlanta Braves
Before the season started, a lot of people had the Braves going far in the playoffs. A lot of that was based on the assumption that they were going to have a strong regular season from start to finish.
Although this is a team that finished the season well, they vastly underperformed for a big chunk of the season. Forget World Series, we were wondering if we were going to see this team in the postseason.
Frankly, the Braves are a team that a lot of people counted out. I do not recall many “experts” saying that Atlanta would be in the Fall Classic. And they could not possibly get by the mighty Dodgers, right?
On Saturday, Atlanta beat the Dodgers by a score of 4-2 and ended the series in 6 games on their home field. It was about a year ago this time that they blew a 3-1 lead in the ALCS to that same Los Angeles team.
In Game 6, Ian Anderson went 4 innings and allowed 1 earned run. After he departed, a total of 4 relievers were used to finish things off.
Charlie Morton will be called on for Game 1 against his former team. His last start came in Game 3 where he went 5 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Morton will look to cut down on his walks.
The pitching, which got much better for this team as the year went on, was mostly solid in the series with the Dodgers. Clearly, it is no easy task to slow down the Bats of Los Angeles. The lone exception came in Game 5 where they allowed 11 runs.
The offense is the biggest strength of this team and they sure showed during the playoffs. Even though Freddie Freeman had his struggles, other guys like Eddie Rosario stepped up in the clutch. In the series with the Dodgers, this team scored a total of 28 runs.
Houston Astros
Another year and the Astros are in the World Series. It makes sense considering they just played in their fifth straight ALCS.
I do not think many people are surprised that this team has advanced to the Fall Classic. This was a team that had very high expectations for the season and was considered one of the favorites to make it all the way.
Despite a few struggles, Houston navigated through the ALDS and ALCS without all that much adversity. Sure, they were down to the Red Sox 2-1 in the series, but then came back and won 3 in a row. On Friday, they ended Boston’s season by beating them 5-0.
Luis Garcia pitched much better on Friday. The young right-hander went 5.2 innings and struck out 7 batters. He provided his team with a big spark.
The Astros will be calling on Framber Valdez for Game 1. The left-hander pitched excellent in Game 5 against the Red Sox. He went 8 innings and allowed 1 earned run.
The pitching really stepped up for this squad as the ALCS went on. In the final 3 games, Boston scored a combined 3 runs. Earlier on in the series, it was a much different story.
The offense, which was the best in runs scored per game in the regular season, was awesome in the first two rounds of the playoffs. They got contributions from lots of different batters.
If this club plays as they have so far in October, I have a hard time seeing them losing the World Series. With that said, the Braves do present a big challenge.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Braves are 14-3 in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Braves are 7-2 in their last 9 playoff games.
- The Astros are 4-9 in their last 13 interleague home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Astros are 0-4 in their last 4 World Series home games.
Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
We have finally made it to the World Series, folks. I think we are going to get a very good series.
Both of these teams are obviously really good. With that said, I do feel Houston is the better team, but that does not mean I am sold on them winning the series. I feel Atlanta has a very good chance to do so.
I look for Atlanta to keep Game 1 close. I do not expect a blowout by Houston because I do not feel the Braves are overmatched. I would not be surprised to see the Braves win the first game outright.
I am taking the Braves getting 1.5 runs for my play.
