A great midweek pitchers duel takes place by the Bay. I wonder if MadBum ever gets depressed by teh fact that he seems to always lockup with his fellow aces. Bumgarner vs. Kershaw is must see TV and maybe vs. Greinke will be too. If you we can get used to seeing it for the next seven years. I am OK with that.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona is looking to get back in the game in the NL West this season. So far the results have not been great as they are sub .500 heading into SF for this series. Neither the offense or defense has been where they thought is would be despite significant roster adjustments. It is still early though and there is no real reason to panic. Especially if this series is a win – they took the opener on Monday.
Greinke was the splashy offseason addition but so far the returns have been nil. Greinke got shelled in the opener and is showing improvement but he has still yet to win a game this season. His command seems OK so perhaps he is just warming up – though he was pitching at home for two of his three starts. It is too early to panic but the D-Backs have to be a little nervous.
Saving the day has been been the bullpen. No group in the Majors has pitched more inning or has more wins. Their high leverage guys are getting the job done even if Brad Ziegler at closer is not exactly the most intimidating guy. They have to get more from their starters though.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants are still looking to find a groove. Early on they are swinging the sticks but the pitching has been a big disappointment. It is definitely nice to see a healthy Angel Pagan in the lineup. He leads the team in hitting and scoring run per game, makes you wonder why they went out and got Denard Span. Brandon Belt is also off to a good start, he and Joe Panik are supplying the early power. This lineup looks like it is score more than enough.
MadBum has been just OK this season. He is 1-1 but has yet to be that shutdown guy, at least not yet. There is nothing in his performance to cause any concern. He is striking out more than a batter per inning.
The bullpen has not been sharp though and it may be a problem. People have been wondering when the league would catch up to one trick pony Sergio Romo and the rest of the group is not very intimidating.

Regardless of the less than flattering numbers so far these are two of the most accomplished pitchers in the Majors. This could easily be a 1-0 game but I think one pitcher is likely to outshine the other and I think it will be Bumgarner. There is nothing wrong with backing a hoss like that, especially at home and in a spot where the value is decent enough with Greinke opposite.
