The Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins will close out their three-game series in South Beach as a pair of young pitchers take the mound. Both teams have proven this year that they can hit, so pitching will determine this game.
This one features a pair of pitchers coming off completely opposite starts and a pair of teams looking to climb the standings in their respective divisions.
Arizona Diamondbacks
After winning five games in a row less than two weeks ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves in a bit of a rut. Led by Paul Goldschmidt, Jean Segura and Wellington Castillo, Arizona has a chance to be a top-five club offensively.
The Diamondbacks are top-10 in runs, hits and average, so getting guys across the plate hasn’t been the issue.
The pitching, on the other hand, has been atrocious.
The Diamondbacks are 27th in ERA, 25th in BAA and 28th in WHIP. That’s not good. They’ll send Robbie Ray to the mound to face the Marlins in this one.
Ray comes in with a 4.97 ERA and a bloated WHIP of 1.70. After pitching six scoreless innings against the Giants on April 19, Ray has surrendered 10 earned runs over his last two starts combined.
Miami Marlins
The Marlins will send the lanky Adam Conley to the mound as he looks to capitalize off his 7.2 innings of hitless ball last week against Milwaukee.
Despite not allowing a hit, Miami skipper Don Mattingly pulled Conley due to his high pitch count.
Conley has been hit or miss this season, but he comes in with a WHIP of just 1.22 and a strikeout/walk ratio of more than 2/1.
The Marlins also have some very talented bats in their lineup. Aside from the muscle Giancarlo Stanton, Miami has Martin Prado who currently leads the National League in batting average.
Christian Yelich and J.T. Realmuto also possess averages over .300, so Miami has more offense than people think.
The Marlins have struggled at home this year, so climbing that hurdle will be key to winning this game.
