Diamondbacks vs. Royals Gameday
Arizona enters Wednesday at 78-68 and riding a four-game winning streak. The Diamondbacks have won six of their last 10 games and remain firmly in the NL Wild Card race. They also own the best record in the National League since July 9 at 33-21.
Kansas City comes in at 64-82 after dropping the first two games of this series. The Royals have now lost seven of their last nine following a 13-2 stretch that briefly gave them some momentum.
Arizona has needed extra innings twice, but it has found a way both nights.
The Diamondbacks won Monday’s opener 5-4 in 10 innings before taking Tuesday’s game 5-3 in 11. Arizona is now 2-0 against Kansas City this season. Both victories have required late production after the Royals kept things tight.
The series finale is set for 7:40 PM ET at Kauffman Stadium.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Kansas City Royals Odds & Last 5
Arizona opened as a slight favorite around -112 on the moneyline, with Kansas City close behind at -105. The Diamondbacks are +146 laying 1.5 runs, while the Royals are heavily juiced getting the run and a half. The total is set at 8.5.
The first two games certainly support the expectation of another competitive matchup.
Arizona won 5-4 Monday despite the game remaining scoreless through nine innings. The Diamondbacks followed with another extra-inning win Tuesday, scoring twice in the 11th for a 5-3 victory. Kansas City has been close in both games but hasn’t been able to finish either one.
Royals Stats
Kansas City has been respectable at the plate despite its record. The Royals are batting around .247 and have produced plenty of doubles, giving the lineup an ability to create scoring chances without relying strictly on home runs.
The pitching staff has been much less dependable overall.
Kansas City carries an ERA well above four, although the starting rotation has delivered its share of quality outings. Michael Wacha gave the Royals another one Tuesday, allowing two runs over six innings. That was his league-leading 20th quality start of the season.
Bobby Witt Jr. remains one of the biggest threats in the lineup.
Salvador Perez also continues to provide run production, while Carter Jensen gives Kansas City another source of power. The problem lately has been converting enough opportunities into wins. Tuesday’s defeat was the Royals’ seventh in nine games despite staying tied through 10 innings.

Diamondbacks Stats
Arizona’s offense hasn’t needed huge numbers to keep winning. The Diamondbacks have scored five runs in each of the first two games at Kauffman Stadium, with most of their damage coming late. That has been enough to extend their winning streak to four.
Tim Tawa was right in the middle of Tuesday’s victory.
Tawa homered in the ninth to put Arizona ahead and added another RBI single in the 10th. He also made a diving catch in extra innings. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. eventually delivered the go-ahead RBI triple in the 11th.
Ketel Marte added a sacrifice fly and has hit safely in all seven games since returning from injury. His bat gives Arizona another proven threat near the top of the order. The Diamondbacks have also received contributions throughout the lineup during this winning streak.
The biggest story remains the timing.
Arizona hasn’t overwhelmed Kansas City early, but it has consistently produced when the game has been on the line. Back-to-back extra-inning victories have kept the Diamondbacks moving in the right direction in the Wild Card race.

Diamondbacks vs. Royals Pitching Matchup
Zac Gallen gets the ball for Arizona with a 3-9 record and 6.34 ERA. The right-hander has 61 strikeouts and a 1.56 WHIP, making this a difficult season by his standards. Arizona will be looking for a steadier outing from him in the finale.
Gallen’s biggest problem has been allowing too much traffic.
That puts pressure on him against a Kansas City lineup capable of stringing together hits. He still has the experience to navigate trouble, but his current numbers don’t offer much margin for error. Arizona may need its bullpen again after using seven pitchers Tuesday.
Daniel Lynch IV starts for Kansas City at 4-5 with a 3.51 ERA and 46 strikeouts. His overall 1.09 WHIP looks considerably better than Gallen’s.
The season numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Lynch has struggled since moving back into the rotation, posting a 6.97 ERA across his first six starts in that role. That makes this matchup less one-sided than the overall ERAs suggest. Both starters enter with legitimate questions for Wednesday night.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Kansas City Royals bottom line: Arizona brings the stronger recent form, while both starting pitchers carry enough uncertainty to keep the series finale competitive.

Diamondbacks Royals Free Pick: Diamondbacks ML -112
Here is my Diamondbacks Royals free pick: I’m backing the Diamondbacks ML -112 for my play, even with Zac Gallen carrying some ugly numbers into this start. Arizona has won four straight, including the first two games of this series, and I’m riding that momentum at a reasonable moneyline price.
Gallen is the obvious concern. His 6.34 ERA and 1.56 WHIP aren’t numbers I normally want to lay money with, but Arizona doesn’t need him to dominate Daniel Lynch IV to cash this ticket.
That’s an important distinction for me.
Arizona keeps finding ways to win close games, and that’s exactly what I want at this price.
The Diamondbacks won Monday 5-4 in 10 innings, then followed with a 5-3 victory in 11 on Tuesday. Back-to-back extra-inning wins tell me plenty about how they’re playing right now.
Kansas City has dropped seven of nine, and I’m not interested in stepping in front of Arizona’s run. The Royals can make Gallen work, but their recent form gives me little reason to believe they’ll suddenly finish the job.
This doesn’t need to be pretty. Arizona only needs another win, and I’ll trust the hotter club to get it.
My money is on the Diamondbacks ML -112.
