The two worst road teams in the league square off Friday night when the Diamondbacks visit Colorado. Both teams have just 14 wins going away this season, but the big difference is that Colorado is one of the better home squads in baseball with a 41-21 mark at Coors Field.
The Rockies have continued their mastery on their own diamond, most recently completing a 3-game sweep over San Diego. Arizona isn’t playing bad either though, grabbing 6 of their last 7 vs. the Padres and Phillies – but all of those were in Phoenix.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Despite being in last place in the NL West and an astonishing 37.5 games off the pace in the division, give credit to Arizona for not completely throwing in the towel. The D’Backs just completed an impressive 6-1 home stand against two playoff contenders in the Padres and Phillies.
Of course the big concern ahead of Friday night’s game is that the Diamondbacks head out on the road. Arizona has a league low 14 wins away from Chase Field this season, and have dropped 40 of their last 51 road tilts.
Compounding things with Arizona being so bad on the road is that they have to visit Coors Field where the Rockies are a whole different animal. Colorado has won 8 of their last 9 at home, and have won 5 straight at Denver in the head to head series.
The Rockies hit the cover off the ball at home, making life difficult for Arizona starter Tyler Gilbert (1-1, 0.00 ERA) on Friday. Then again the lefty rises to a challenge, throwing a no-hitter last Saturday in his first ever MLB start.
Colorado Rockies
All three games against the potent San Diego offense went ‘under’ the total this week, but that’s due mostly to solid Colorado pitching. The Rockies once again got the bats going at Coors Field, plating 20 runs in the sweep over San Diego.
Trevor Story got into the HR act in Wednesday’s 7-5 win that Colorado was somehow a +136 underdog in. The Rockies have now taken 5 straight at home vs. the Padres, making the +136 look like a trap. The Diamondbacks have also dropped five straight at Coors Field.
C.J. Cron and Charlie Blackmon each had HRs in the first two wins over the Padres series. Cron is 10 for his last 22 and Blackmon is hitting .333 over the past week, but no Rockies player has ever faced Gilbert, who is making just his 5th career MLB appearance.
Colorado got some great pitching in the San Diego series, and now turns to Austin Gomber (9-7, 4.09) to keep that run going. The lefty threw 6.0 innings of shutout ball in his last Coors Field start, but served up 5 ER over just 4.0 IP last Friday at the Giants.
