Giants 2020 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2020 San Francisco Giants predictions? After being the dynasty of the 2010’s, the Giants are now in full rebuild mode. Will they shock the world and make a run at the playoffs?
MLB Giants Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Surprising to most people, the Giants made a run at the postseason before the all star break last season. Although failing to do so with a record of 77-85, they finished 3rd in the NL West.

The team did not get any younger, but with an ample amount of veterans, they do have experience on their side. The basement is likely for the Giants this season with no key additions and their top prospects not ready to play at the major league level.

Key Additions:
- Hunter Pence
- Wilmer Flores
- Billy Hamilton
When the key additions to an off-season are Hunter Pence and Wilmer Flores, I think that exemplifies how poor of an off-season it is. Pence is nothing more than a depth piece, but will step into an important role. Flores is an infielder that will platoon with the likes of Brandon Crawford, Pablo Sandoval, and Joe Panik.
He could be a trade piece if he performs well before the trade deadline. Johnny Cueto could return from Tommy John, but in what form is anyone’s guess. Could he return to his Cy Young form? Highly unlikely.
Billy Hamilton is a mildly important add as he replaces the outfield spot of Kevin Pillar’s.
Key Losses:
- Madison Bumgarner
- Kevin Pillar
Kevin Pillar was nothing more than a placeholder for the Giants as they continue their rebuild, but had spurts of high level play last season. Many thought they would trade him, but no suitors matched their asking price.
Bumgarner, a staple in the former dynasty, left for the Arizona Diamondbacks this off-season. He was the ace since the beginning of his career and will be missed. The Giants will look to fill his role with lackluster options. Tyler Beede will need to live up to his 1st round potential.
2020 San Francisco Giants Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- Mauricio Dubon 2B
- Mike Yastrzemski OF
- Evan Longoria 3B
- Brandon Belt 1B
- Alex Dickerson OF
- Brandon Crawford SS
- Billy Hamilton OF
- Buster Posey C
This lineup doesn’t have much pop and in a big stadium, home runs will be a problem to come by. Yastrezemski possibly overperformed last season, but if he plays like he did last season, he will be a building piece for this team for years to come.
2020 San Francisco Giants Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Johnny Cueto
- Jeff Samardzija
- Kevin Gausman
- Drew Smyly
- Andrew Suarez/Ty Beede
The rotation is underwhelming, even if Cueto returns to a solid form. Samardzija has underperformed since signing with San Fran and the back end of this rotation does not offer much promise.
If Beede can return from injury sooner than expected, he could become a reliable starter for this team. If not, this team does not have an offense that can match the number of runs that will be allowed.
2020 San Francisco Giants Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Tony Watson
This bullpen is lacking after losing Will Smith and Hunter Strickland in the few past off seasons. Watson will continue to be a reliable reliever and will step into a closer spot that may not get much action.
2020 San Francisco Giants Predictions: 70 wins and 5th in the NL West (Bet Now at any of our reviewed MLB Sportsbooks!)
Not only do the Giants have problems in the offensive realm, their rotation and bullpen do not offer much of anything. I just don’t see them scoring north of 70 wins, especially in a division with the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Padres. If they exceed expectations, I think they could score 4th in the NL West with 74-77 wins.
