Phillies 2020 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2020 Philadelphia Phillies predictions? After a disappointing season last year, the Phillies will look to rebound here with an impressive 2020 campaign that could lead them to a postseason berth.
MLB Phillies Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Surprising to most people, the Phillies were only 2 games over .500 last season, finishing 82-80 and 4th place in the NL East. Many had them poised to make a playoff run after adding Bryce Harper and Andrew McCutchen.

With a new manager, the Phillies will try to once again clinch a playoff berth in an already stacked division. Time will tell if Joe Girardi will help this team get over the hill.

Key Additions:
- Zack Wheeler
- Didi Gregorius
- Joe Girardi
Zack Wheeler will help sure up the lackluster rotation depth behind Aaron Nola. Jake Arrieta was the one pegged to be a reliable number two behind Nola, but has severely underwhelmed since signing in Philadelphia. Wheeler should be a solid number two option and be able to contribute immediately to a pitcher thirsty team.
The signing of Didi Gregorius has been somewhat overshadowed this off-season, but should return swimmingly from his injury and be an everyday starter for this team. He will sure up the middle infield that has struggled ever since the departure of Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins.
Joe Girardi isn’t a player, I realize that, but he might be the biggest addition the Phillies made this off-season. He has the postseason experience, knows how to build a winning team, and is a huge step up from Gabe Kapler.
Key Losses:
- Maikel Franco
- Cesar Hernandez
- Pat Neshek
If these are the three players who headline your key losses, I would deem that a successful off-season.
Franco seemed to be a staple in this team during his rookie year, but has went down hill since. They looked to trade him last season but with no suitors, he is now a free agent.
Hernandez is a sneaky important loss, as his offensive production was consistently good over his stint with the Phillies. Gregorious is without a doubt an upgrade, however.
Neshek was injured last season, but with an already depleted bullpen, losing the side arm subber does not help.
2020 Philadelphia Phillies Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- Jean Segura 2B
- Andrew McCutchen OF
- Scott Kingery 3B
- Rhys Hoskins 1B
- Adam Haseley OF
- Didi Gregorius SS
- Bryce Harper OF
- JT Realmuto C
If McCutchen returns from injury in a healthy fashion, this lineup will endure a major boost. Hoskins and Harper need to gain some form of consistency. Haseley is the only player in this lineup that could lose his job in the early part of the season.
2020 Philadelphia Phillies Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Aaron Nola
- Zack Wheeler
- Jake Arrieta
- Vincent Velasquez
- Zach Eflin
The top end of this rotation is really good, but the bottom half of it will be a major liability. Both Velasquez and Eflin had high earned run averages last season and I don’t think that will change.
Arrieta is the wild card. If he has a decent season, it could be the difference of a postseason berth and just missing out.
2020 Philadelphia Phillies Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Hector Neris
Neris is bad, as is the rest of this bullpen. Look for them to make a move at the trade deadline to aid what should be a weak spot.
2020 Philadelphia Phillies Predictions: 85 wins and 3rd in the NL East (Bet Now at any of our reviewed MLB Sportsbooks!)
Between the lack of consistency offensively and the underwhelming pitching, the Phillies will have only mild success this season. Girardi will help, but I don’t know to what extent.
