Rockies 2020 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2020 Colorado Rockies predictions? The Rox were one of the most disappointing teams in the Majors last season. They could be better this year if they can get some pitching. The NL West is more than just L.A. Arizona and San Diego might be pretty good too.
MLB Rockies Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Colorado has some big bats in Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story. The left side of the infield is a nice building block but there are a lot of question marks everywhere else.
Question marks do not even begin to describe the situation on the mound. German Marquez looks like a piece to build around but he is far from a guarantee. There is upside with guys like Jon Gray but we have been saying that for a while.

Colorado was a bankroll killer last season. Maybe this season they can be the opposite with a little better luck and the bats being a little more consistent away from home.

Key Additions:
- No significant new additions
Coming off a season of disappointment it would have been more inspiring if the Rockies had made some additions on the field. That was not the case.
During the offseason, there was a lot of talk about dealing Arenado. He has a big contract but he is also the best player in the game at his position. I don’t see how you would bring back fair value without setting the franchise back at least three seasons.
Key Losses:
- Tyler Anderson
- Michael Wacha
Anderson made 32 starts on the 2018 playoff team but was a disaster in limited action last season. He always gave up a ton of homeruns so leaving Colorado for anywhere else might be a good thing. The Rox can expect to see him as he grabbed a job with the Giants.
2020 Colorado Rockies Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- David Dahl, OF
- Trevor Story, SS
- Charlie Blackmon, OF
- Noland Arenado, 3B
- Daniel Murphy, 1B
- Ryan McMahon, 2B
- Sam Hilliard, OF
- Tony Wolters, C
Story and Arenado are two highly productive players who are also in their prime. Blackmon and Murphy are two older players that enjoy hitting at Coors Field but they also produce elsewhere. Dahl is the key to having a lethal top five. If he stays healthy they will score more than enough runs even though the bottom half of the lineup is nothing scary.
2020 Colorado Rockies Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Jon Gray
- German Marquez
- Kyle Freeland
- Antonio Senzatela
- Jeff Hoffman
Gray might have had a breakout last season. He is one of the most intimidating presences on the mound but the results have not always backed that up.
Conversely, Marquez is not much to look at but he can make any lineup look silly. He regressed last season and the Rockies suffered big time as a result.
If they are going to be competitive at all they need at least one other starter to step up. Hoffman was a top prospect but has struggled in the Majors. He is already 27 so it is pretty much now or never.
2020 Colorado Rockies Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Wade Davis
Davis was terrible last season but he has experience in the role and could certainly bounce back. The bullpen has always been a challenge as sometimes it takes arms a little while to get used to pitching at Coors so they can’t just plug and play the way that other teams do with their bullpens these days.
2020 Colorado Rockies Predictions: 76 Wins and third in the NL West (Bet Now at any of our reviewed MLB Sportsbooks!)
The playoffs do not look realistic for this group this season. improvement or at the very least some more predictability would be great for backers.
Colorado is going to score some runs but with the pitching, they have this may look more like the teams of old where no lead was really safe.
Nolan Arenado has to win an MVP at some point. He has five straight top 8 finishes but unless the team really surprises that is going to be tough to get this season. He also has 5 straight seasons with at least 37 homers and 110 RBIs.
The Rox have to hope for some big time internal development on the mound just to be competitive. Gray and Marquez could both be big winners and it still might not be enough.
With Davis at the backend they are probably just hoping for enough consistency to flip him to a contender. Scott Oberg would be the next man up in that scenario and he was their best reliever last season.
